Ebook Of “Raila Odinga’s Stolen Presidency” Launched

The Ebook version of ”Raila Odinga’s Stolen Presidency: Consequences and the future of Kenya” has been launched in the Internet and is now ready for download. The release of the Ebook is part of a campaign to make the book more and readily available to readers across the world especially to the Kenyan audience which is a key target of the book.

Stolen Presidency Ebook launched

Stolen Presidency Ebook launched

In the recent past, there have been attempts by the Kenyan government to intimidate bookshops and other book distribution outlets to prevent them from stocking “controversial books”, a retrogressive tendency which has no place in today’s highly technological world where the Internet has taken over as a dominant media channel that defies control by both individuals and governments alike.

In a CNN broadcast, the Kenyan government was reported to have asserted that Michela Wrong’s book, “Its Our Turn to Eat” together with “other controversial books” will not be allowed to sell in Kenya. This, by any stretch of the imagination, was a callous attempt at overt State censorship, a draconian measure which, many Kenyans believe, belong to the past when both the Moi and Kenyatta dictatorships used to ban books on grounds that they were “seditious”.

The launching of the Raila Ebook should easily beat any attempts at censorship as the political struggle continues in Kenya. As compared to the hard copy, the Ebook is much more practical especially in this age of laptops and other electronic reading devices.

The Ebook comes with a free sample copy which should give the reader an inkling about the full version before purchase. Another advantage of the Ebook is that it comes with several features that facilitate easy navigation. Many Ebooks come in PDF formats and this makes it difficult for the reader to navigate effectively because the only option available is to click on the pages to either move forward or backwards.

In the Stolen Presidency Ebook, this problem has been eliminated because the book is stored in a user friendly environment where the reader has more than 3,500 links to click on during navigation. A reader seeking to check out a reference at the back of the book does not have to go through a series of clicks to get there. You simply click on the reference number on the text and you are immediately brought to the relevant reference page. From there, the reader can navigate back to the page under study and continue reading.

Navigation Details
Likewise, the reader will be able to jump between chapters by moving back and forth from the “content” page which is linked in all pages. There is also a search facility to enable the reader find a specific search entry on a page. By checking an entry in the control panel, the reader will be able to re-open the book from the last page navigated. The reader will not, therefore, have to remember or write down the last page navigated since the last reading.

There is no limitation as to the number of computers on which one can read the book and it will be possible to move from computer to computer by storing the Ebook in a storage device such as a USB gadget.

For purchase, the transaction has been simplified as much as possible. As soon as a purchase is made, the reader is re-directed to a download page while an automated email is also sent to the purchaser with log in details.

Once the download is complete, the purchaser can then run the Ebook after which a prompt pops up asking for activation. Using the log-in details sent via email, the purchaser should be able to open the Ebook by entering a user name and pass word to begin reading immediately. You do not have to log in every time on the same computer for another reading session. One log in is enough until you move to another computer or until you log off.

The Ebook has undergone an extensive test run and is expected to function without major technical hitches. The free sample copy comes with a “Tell a friend” button and this is important in helping the message of the Ebook to spread. The free version does not require any log-in and can be sampled immediately after download. The sample contains extra information about events surrounding the book following publication together with information on how to download the full copy. In case of difficulty, there is contact information for technical support. The processing of the Ebook has provided opportunity to settle known issues since the book’s publication.

Mapambano Distributors have exclusive distribution rights of the Ebook which comes at a reasonable price of US$ 17, a huge difference compared to the hard copy (you save US$ 35 from the Hard copy).  To purchase the Ebook for immediate download or to download the free sample copy, visit the Raila Odinga’s Stolen Presidency Download Center.

Mapambano Online wishes all readers interested in the Ebook a smooth download and smooth navigation as the truth about Raila Odinga’s Stolen Presidency also spreads peacefully across the world and as the launch of the book in Kenya is eagerly awaited.

BN: Police Chopper Down With Police Commissioner And Ojode

POLICE Commissioner Major General Hussein Ali and Assistant Minister for Internal Security Mr Orwa Ojode and several senior government officials from the ministries of internal security and public works were injured in a police chopper accident in Kapsabet town.

The 12.30pm incident occurred after the Russian-made police chopper developed mechanical problems while taking off, lost power in the air before plunging in a nearby field. “The chopper developed difficulty after take off, stalled in the air and plunged into the field,” said Public Works Minister Chris Obure. Obure said Ojode, Ali and other occupants were taken to the nearby Kapsabet District Hospital and would be evacuated to Nairobi for specialised treatment.

“We had several senior government officers and security officers. It was a big team and we are praying for them,” said the minister. No casualties were reported. Rift Valley PC Hasan Noor Hassan, who was in the chopper, also escaped with minor injuries. Speaking to KTN from Kapsabet District Hospital, Ojode and Ali confirmed that they had sustained minor injuries and assured the public that they were safe. Obure said the team had just inaugurated Kapsabet police station and were heading to Tomboroa when the crash occurred.

A witness, Mr Josephat Koskei, said he saw the chopper wobbling in the air before it plunged in a field near the Kapsabet stadium. Koskei said a bang forced members of the public who had gathered to wave goodbye to the team to run for cover before a rescue team got to the scene. “It was a terrible site and blood curdling. We are praying that they are safe, but we saw some of them writhing in pain,” he said. The chopper was extensively damaged. A medical team on the ground said the injured government officials would be flown to Nairobi for further tests.

KSB Stats Counter Passes the Half A Million Mark

Hits counter at KSB has just passed the half a million mark. We take this opportunity to thank all our loyal readers who continue to enjoy stories and other items at the blog. These readers are the real forces who have been driving traffic at the site. The next vote of thanks goes to our Network of agents who have been picking the stories and reporting them to the control tower. These loyal agents are the “cogs in the wheel” of information at the blog despite their glaring invisibility.

KSB fan sends greetings on the ocassion to mar the half a million hits at the blog

KSB fan sends greetings to all readers and fans alike on the occasion to mark the "Half a million hits" at the blog site. "I can never sleep without checking out KSB", she says.

There is a group of loyal commentators who have been filling the gaps in the stories as they roll. Since the introduction of comment section, traffic at KSB has increased considerably. At some times, key updates are done by commentators although these updates have, at times, contained “an overdose of details”. Many comments have had to be edited. We hope that the responsible use of this facility will continue to be observed and that people’s reputations will continue to be protected by commentators as per the law.

Obviously, there are readers who are happy with KSB while there are others who gnash their teeth and pray that KSB folds. This is democracy and there is little we can do about it. The central issue is that the growing traffic at the blog is a sign that KSB is of interest to different readers who come here for different reasons.

There are those who come for information about Kenyans in Stockholm, others to pass time while others come to follow scandal. All these readers have a right to be here and what we can say is that continue getting your fill when my fingers continue to run on the key board.

Occasionally, I get into debate by contacts about blog content especially at social gathering joints. Just like many Kenya-Stockholmers, I am not available at every function because of my rather busy schedule but it is always good to listen to what readers think, not through the comments but face to face, man to man or, if you like, man to woman, man to lady or just at a man to girl level.

I must not forget readers who have been very instrumental in changing the face of KSB by quietly advocating for a broadening of the subject matter without allowing the blog to go outside the scope of Kenya-Stockholm matters. These are readers who love KSB and, although they don’t report stories, they try to improve it in their small ways and I have been listening. They are a productive and imaginative core of fans who believe that KSB is a good idea which could be improved. To all of them, I say thank you very much for your input.

Paparazzi Pictures of Kenya Stockholmers
Others have been asking about what happened to the “Momentpix”. It’s all about the time I can spend at the blog every day. An archive of the momentpix exists at the blog but there is no link. I am working on it and soon, the pictures will be available for download by their owners and other admirers.

As readers begin the journey towards the “1 million hits”, KSB will remain open and democratic at all levels. Kenya-Stockholmers are not the only people with scandals. The truth is that scandal is universal and the Swedes have well established newspapers (like Aftonbladet or Expressen) to cover Swedish scandals with even deeper details that would make KSB look like a child’s play thing so don’t get stuck wondering about petty Kenya-Stockhokholm scandals at KSB. This does not mean that KSB will soon become a kinda KS-Bladet as some people have posited.

In fact, a reader was proposing a link that could feature a continuous summary of Swedish scandals in the media to balance the Kenya-Stockholm ones.  It looks like a good idea but the risk is that there are too many scandals involved and if they are to be focused here, KSB would lose meaning by becoming a duplication of Swedish media reports. Scandals here cannot match the Swedish ones so there is no contest. Nevertheless, the proposal remains interesting and will continue to be on the table for consideration on a limited scale.

In any case, scandals at KSB are not just tiny but petty. In fact, they could pass for “cheap gossip”. Interestingly, whenever there is a “scandal”, more and more readers get hooked up while the comments normally reach “fever pitch”, a sign that scandal is always “top of the pops”. This tendency is not new because in Media politics, it is scandal that actually sells and it is routine for editors to buy exclusive rights to scandal purely for profit.

The Paparazzi industry thrives entirely on scandal. KSB has been, at some points, approached to take in “Paparazzi pictures” of Kenya-Stockholmers but we have refused for two reasons. One, KSB is not a “scandal blog” and two, the blog adheres to “Kenya moral standards”. This limits what can and what cannot be published here. The following example could suffice.

You go to a Kenya-Stockholm Party and get extremely zonked. You start to doze off at a corner as people rock on the dance floor. An enemy sneaks and takes a picture with a tichital then mails it for publication at the momentpix. What do we do?

Another example: You break up with your girlfriend and either of you had some “dirty pix”. Thirsting for revenge, you send them in anonymously, claiming that the Kenyan chick is engaged in prostitution, an act, which you think, should be exposed. We don’t engage in that kind of bizz in the name of scandal.

On the whole, readers are encouraged to view this site as a point of information and entertainment. KSB does not seek to undermine, scandalize, destroy or even disparage anybody. That having been said, I hope that you will be part of the one “million-man match” that is already underway. Each and every time you come here, you make your contribution!

Kenyan Delegation Ignored By Swedish Leaders

A Kenyan delegation from Homa Bay was totally ignored by Swedish leaders during their trip to Sweden. The following is a quick translation of an article that appeared in a Swedish local newspaper about the incident. It is difficult to understand where Ambassador Purity Muhindi was as our country men and women were humiliated by wazungu.

“IT WAS EMBARASSING”

Värmdö 04 May 2009

This week, a large delegation from Kenya visited Värmdö. But the visitors were disappointed because the responsible person, Lars-Erik Alversjö, did not receive them while he was also absent during most of the time during the visit.

Delegation included a Mayor and a politician

Delegation included a Mayor and a politician

Värmdö municipality and Ösbyskolan (Ösby school) has been cooperating for many years with their counterparts in Homa Bay in Kenya on a large environmental and democracy project financed with funding from SIDA. They think that it is important for politicians to be involved in governing, participation and decision making.

This week, it was time for a delegation of twelve from Kenya to visit Värmdö. This entourage included, among others, the Mayor, Municipality director and a politician.

The host during the visit was a Steering Committee with the Chairman, Lars-Erik Alversjö from the Moderate Party, taking the lead. They were to receive the visitors and were also expected to be with them during the entire visit.

Welcoming Lunch
But the Chairman gave excuses for their absence during large parts of the visit. This was the case at the first lunch at Gustav’s Inn where he and representatives from the opposition were scheduled to welcome the delegation.

“When we came for lunch, there was nobody from the Alliance who showed up. It was only two Social Democrats and an official,” says Ann-Kristin Särnbrink, a Social Democrat who thought it was really embarrassing.

Afterwards, there was a meeting scheduled in the Town hall and in which the Municipality’s Director was invited. The coordinator had prepared for it and hoped for seven to eight representatives from Värmdö. Their pens and folders were on the table.

Empty space around the table
“They were twelve people on one side and, on the other side was myself, Estrid Landmark and a coordinator. They stood up, one after another, and gave their speeches. It was so embarrassing” says Särnbrink who thinks that any of the other five Municipal commissioners could have showed up.

Failed to say greetings
After three hours, lights in the Town hall were switched off after which the Municipality’s Director and Chairman arrived.

“They said nothing, did not greet the delegation or welcome them. It was the ultimate slap in the face. Actually, how do we take care of our guests in the municipality?, wondered Ann-Kristin Särnbrink.

At a meeting on April 28, the upset visitors expressed their dissatisfaction. “They said they were disappointed. There were discussions and issues that were totally unnecessary, otherwise it was a very nice visit,” says Särnbrink who thinks that it is very embarrassing, given that Värmdö leaders are going down to Kenya at the end of May.
“We were treated incredibly well last year. I do not understand why we welcome our foreign guests in this way.

Apologized

Lars-Erik Alversjö from the Moderate party, told the Council on Wednesday that he sat in a meeting with personnel where he delayed. He said he tried to compensate the visitor’s with his own time.

During the week, he said he had to participate in the Moderate party’s national Conference and that the Council’s President was supposed to hold brief for him.

“It was very unfortunate. I have apologized to the Mayor and explained things. The Municipal Director and I have also had detailed discussions with the group from Homa Bay and they have accepted our apology. But I am not proud of this”, he said.

Tusker Beer Now Available At “System Bolaget”

Tusker Larger, the popular Kenyan brand of beer, is now available at the System Bolaget (The Swedish Liquor distribution chain) and can be ordered at any time. What you need to do is to walk into any System and order a minimum of one crate of 24 bottles and it will be delivered.

According to Anders Bergström of World Beer Trading Company that is responsible for importing and distributing the beer in Sweden, the Tusker brand is not available in single bottles and must be ordered in crates.

The news is likely to be greeted with delight by Kenyans in Sweden especially in Stockholm where the brand has been very scarce and only available through certain restaurants. Details of the unit price was not immediately available although personnel at the System should be able to give quotes.

Kenyan Drops Case Against Ex-wife

A Kenyan man “has dropped all pending cases” against his ex, citing psychological difficulties and pressure from friends. The Kenyan has had a long standing dispute with his ex on the question of child custody and property rights.

According to the Prosecution, the Kenyan decided to drop all cases for the sake of peace. The man has been losing all court cases to the woman then filing appeals or new cases without success.

A sampling of opinion from Kenyans who have been following the case indicate that the woman appears to be smarter than the Kenyan and that this factor has contributed to the man’s loss of every case in the dispute. The man was not immediately available for comment.

Both the man and the woman are reported to be in a permanent state of “cold war” following a bitter separation that was marked by intrigue, character assassination and dirty propaganda wars.

KSB has had an exclusive access to hundreds of court cases involving Kenyans in Stockholm. The archive makes horrific reading of criminal activities of certain Kenyans (including drug trafficking, prostitution and human smuggling). Some cases touch on Kenyans with very high standing in society. The archive is legally obtainable through the Swedish court system.

The archive was obtained by KSB as part of a new research project about trends in criminality among immigrants in Sweden.

Kenyan NGO Workers In Stockholm

A group of Kenyan NGO workers are in Stockholm to attend a Conference. According to an agent, they have been putting up at Hotel Scandic Anglais at Östermalm.

The Kenyan Embassy is aware about their presence here while an Embassy official has been seen in the company of the Kenyans. The Embassy has remained tight lipped about details.

In the meantime, KSB has learnt that there is no Kenyan State official at the level of “Cabinet Minister and above” expected in Sweden in the next two months.
