A great argument is cropping up between the family of former veteran politician Martin Shikuku Oyondi’s family and the clan of abarechea over his burial.
In a meeting that was held Saturday in his Butere home to discuss his burial, the two parties failed to agree as some of the elders within the clan said it is a taboo for one to be buried in a place far away from his homeland while the family members said a will written by the late must be honored.
According to Mrs. Holiness omurunga oyongi who is shikukus younger brother peter leo omurungas wife who is the only person from the family in his Butere home, the late must just be buried according to his will.
“We want Mheshimiwa to be buried the way he wanted. We won’t allow people to go against his will as that will be lack of respect to the dead. His will must just be honored just as Wangari Maathai was honored”, she said adding that since the clan accepted the wife to the late to be buried in his Ndalu farm, they should also let him be buried in Trans Nzoia.
The clan of Abarechea led by Willies Opuka argued that the burial should be in Butere as Shikuku was their member of parliament and not in Bungoma saying that will disown the community.
“It is good for the late to be buried in his original home and not in Ndalu as that will not please our gods of misango and cause an abomination to the clan”, he argued.
According to the culture of Abarechea as stated by these elders, any person who dies far away from his home must be brought to his original home for burial and not where he or she has relocated to.
The body of the dead must also get in his home through a new gate that is specially meant for him referred to as eshibanga and not the bomas gate as that is believed to cause more deaths in the family.
Some of the neighbors to the late revealed that Shikuku had neglected his real home as he had not constructed any house that would earn him dignity despite his fame as one of the veteran politicians who fought for the multiparty system in Kenya.
His home just opposite Ebukhokoro primary school some few meters to Shiatsala Market has four houses erected –two mud houses that belongs to his two brothers Ambrose Oluchiri who moved to Kitale and their lastborn peter Leo Omurunga , his parents house and his own.
As the difference crops up some of the residents says they have to view his body before it’s ferried to Kitale for burial.
