  • FEATURED STORY: What Is The Truth About Obama’s Brother And The Muslim Brotherhood?
    By gmbwatch

The GMBDW has received numerous inquiries about reports that Kenyan citizen Malik Obama, the half brother of President Obama, is “one of the architects of the major investments of the international organization of the Muslim Brotherhood.” The claim appears to originate from recent statements by Tahani Al-Jebali, described as the former Chancellor of the Constitutional Court of Egypt. Ms. Al-Jebali has offered no evidence to date of her claim which we consider it to be outlandish on the face of it. However, in connection with this claim about Malik Obama, there those that have pointed to his alleged position with the Sudanese Islamic Dawa Organization (IDO) as support for the notion that he is a “major operative” of the Global Muslim Brotherhood.

The IDO is a Sudanese NGO that describes itself on its website as:

Munazzamat al-Da’wa al-Islamiia is an international non-governmental religious organization; based in Khartoum , capital of sudan, founded in May 1980. The Munazzamat aims at spereading Islam courteously and gently and at providing social services to the deprived people in Africa regardless to colour , race or religion. The munazzamat claims liberty , justice and equality among people and it opposes racial discrimination. The Munazzamat is doing it’s best to spread tolerance and peace Among muslims and other religions followers , and to inspire the beautiful spiritual values of the religions which are meant for the welfare and happiness of mankind.

The IDO is headed by Field Marshal ‘Abd al-Rahman Siwar al-Dhahab described in a 2009 NEFA Foundation report as the Deputy Head of the Union of Good (UOG), a Hamas fund-raising organization headed by Global Muslim Brotherhood leader Youssef Qaradawi. The NEFA report describes Al-Dhahab as follows:

Field Marshal ‘Abd al-Rahman Siwar al-Dhahab (Deputy) (Sudan) ‘Abd al-Rahman Siwaral-Dhahab is the former President of Sudan (1985-1989). During his term as President, Siwaral-Dhahab was close to the National Islamic Front (NIF), the political party representing the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan. He is currently the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Islamic Dawa Organization, a Sudanese NGO working in Africa said to be close to Saudi Arabia. The Islamic Dawa Organization is also a [Union of Good] member organization.

Al-Dhahab was reported again in 2012 to be the IDO Chairman. It should also be noted that the Union of Good (UOG) was designated in 2008 by the US Treasury as a terrorist entity in connection with the financing of Hamas. Beyond Al-Dhahab’s role as a leader of the UOG, the IDO itself is one of the member organizations of the International Islamic Council for Da’wa and Relief (IICDR,) an umbrella group for 86 Islamic organizations, many of which are associated with the global Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas fundraising, or support for Al Qaeda.

So, what exactly is the role of Malik Obama in the IDO and what evidence is there for the notion that he is a “major operative” of the Global Muslim Brotherhood? It has been reported that Malik Obama is the Executive Secretary of the IDO but there is no evidence that he has any role in the Sudanese parent organization. He is not identified on the IDO website as a Trustee nor could any mention of him be found on the website or anywhere else as an IDO officer. A 2012 Saudi media report does identify Malik Obama as the Executive Secretary of the Kenyan IDO branch and photos from Malik Obama’s Foundation website do identify its Kenya compound as the site of the Kenyan branch of the Munazzamat al-Da’wa al-Islamiia (IDO) as well as of the “Women’s Section” of the Al-Islah Society of Bahrain, known to be the Muslim Brotherhood of Bahrain. Other Foundation photos show Malik Obama at a 2010 IDO Board of Directors Conference in Khartoum, Sudan including photos of him together with Field Marshal Al-Dhahab.

Given all of the above, it certainly can be said that Malik Obama appears to be serving as an officer of the Kenyan branch of the IDO, an organization that sits clearly in the midst of an important Islamist/Global Muslim Brotherhood organization and headed by an individual who is a both a close associate of Global Muslim Brotherhood leader Youssef Qaradawi and who is tied to Hamas fundraising though the Union of Good (UOG). Yet, still missing is any evidence that Malik Obama himself is a “major operative” of the Global Muslim Brotherhood and the GMBDW has never come across his name in connection with any other organization, meeting, conference, or anything else connecting him to the rest of the Global Muslim Brotherhood. It seems to us that more likely than being an important Brotherhood operative that instead, Malik Obama was welcomed into the IDO organization precisely because of the prestige that his relationship to President Obama brings or is perceived to bring with him. That said, the GMBDW wonders about the propriety of Malik Obama’s Foundation being awarded tax-exempt status by the Department of Treasury given his apparent role in an organization headed by an individual who is a leader in a Treasury Department designated terrorist entity as described above.

  • Does Obama Support the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt?

The U.S. says its not taking sides, but Egyptians see evidence that they are

    By Jay Newton-Small @JNSmallAug. 23, 2013

There seems to be something of a disconnect between who Egyptians think America is supporting, and who America actually is supporting in Cairo. In the U.S., story after story has been written about how the Obama Administration has bent over backwards not to call this latest change in government a “coup” and has been relatively muted in its reaction to the deaths of so many civilians – upwards of 1,000 in the last week alone.

Yet Egyptians remain convinced that President Obama is backing the Muslim Brotherhood and deposed President Mohamed Morsi. At a lunch at the Egyptian Ambassador’s residence on Thursday, Dr. Mohamed Abou El-Ghar, head of the Egyptian Social Democratic Party, bluntly warned a small gathering of journalists and policy wonks that he fears, “America is losing Egypt…There is a very strong perception that they are supporting the Muslim Brotherhood and they are against other parties,” he said.

The perception began even before the Egyptians elected Morsi, Abou el-Ghar said, when Senator John McCain, an Arizona Republican and 2008 GOP presidential nominee, met with members of the Muslin Brotherhood in February 2012 but not representatives from competing parties. The headlines were: U.S. Warms to the Muslim Brotherhood. It was furthered when U.S. Ambassador to Egypt Anne Patterson criticized Egypt’s military for interfering in July when opponents deposed Morsi. That view has become more widespread since, with the Pentagon’s decision to defer delivery of F-16 fighter jets to Egypt and the Administration’s review of aid to Cairo.

The latest evidence of Obama’s purported proclivity towards the Brotherhood came in Thursday’s State Department briefing, which has made headlines in Egypt. In it, spokesman Jen Psaki says that the choice to detain of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is an “internal Egyptian legal matter,” but in the next breath calls for the release of Morsi, who is accused of many serious crimes. Egyptians took this as further evidence that America is intervening on behalf of the Brotherhood still:

QUESTION: Do you have any comment on the release of former President Mubarak?

MS. PSAKI: Well, as we have long said, with respect to the Mubarak trial and decisions made, this is an internal Egyptian legal matter, that it’s working its way through the Egyptian legal system. Beyond that, I don’t have more for you. I refer you to the Egyptian Government.

QUESTION: Okay. So you have no feeling, no comment on the fact that the elected president, Morsi, is in prison and the former president who was accused of heinous crimes is actually out?

MS. PSAKI: Well, we’ve spoken – and I know you and I even spoke about this just yesterday.

QUESTION: Now that it has happened, I mean –

MS. PSAKI: Well, our position on Mr. Morsi remains the same. We believe there should be a process for his release. We’ve spoken frequently about our concerns about arbitrary arrests. And certainly, in order to have an inclusive process moving forward, an inclusive political process, we believe all parties need to have the opportunity to participate. It’s hard to do that when there are several members of one being detained.

Clearly, Obama doesn’t support the Brotherhood over the interim government. I’d argue he probably doesn’t support the interim government over the Brotherhood, either. Obama has said time and again that only the Egyptians can decide their future. But he may want to make it clear to Egyptians that he has no ulterior motives here and no secret preferences.

They sensationally claimed that Kimaiyo and Muhoro should be investigated for failing to act on intelligence briefs given to them.

They also claimed that some senior officers within the Office of the President should be investigated for “suppressing” intelligence reports.

They said NIS was not to blame for the Westgate attack that has claimed over 100 lives.

It has also emerged that a policewoman has recorded a statement after her brother who works for the NIS warned her not to visit Westgate on Saturday because of an impending attack. The NIS officer is being sought for interrogation.

The pregnant policewoman regularly went window shopping in Westgate on Saturdays.

“She has told police that her brother who is a NIS officer warned her not to visit Westgate that Saturday because she would not be able to run with her bulging tummy,” a senior officer involved in the investigation said yesterday.

The policewoman was picked up from her home on Tuesday night and taken to CID headquarters on Kiambu road where she was interrogated for four hours before being allowed to go home.

The NIS officers told the Star yesterday that NIS Director General Michael Gichangi was willing to testify in the open in today’s meeting with the Defense committee of the National Assembly.

“I can assure you that the director general is willing to restore the image of the intelligence service because of the negative publicity it has received due to the Westgate attack and the many previous security lapses in the country,” said one NIS officer.

Police fail to link UK citizen to Westgate
    ..Thursday, September 26, 2013 – 00:00 — BY KAMORE MAINA

Journalists fight for a press release from KDF Information Operations Officer Cyrus Oguna after Interior cabinet secretary gave a briefing on Westgate yesterday. Photo/Monicah MwangiPolice have said they will not release Abdirazak Mohammed, the 35-year-old British man they arrested at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Monday night.

He was attempting to board a plane for the UK.

Abdirazak is still being questioned by the Anti-Terorrism Police Unit even though they have no evidence linking him to the Westgate attack.

Sources in the unit said the man was arrested after he arrived at the airport at 9pm more than three hours after the flight he was supposed to take had left.

The police say that after questioning the man and his relatives, they found nothing to link him to the attack. They also examined his passport and had by yesterday ascertained that it was a genuine one, detectives yesterday said they had no evidence to link him to terror attack.

Investigators also examined his passport which was thought to be fake and yesterday said it was a genuine.

Sources yesterday said Abdirazak’s mother and other relatives who live in Eastleigh were questioned and vouched that he had come to visit in JUne this year and was due to leave Monday.

Also being held are two relatives of 35-year-old driver Ali Gitonga who was arrested by the police at the Westgate on the day of the attack.

Gitonga’s wife Khadija Mohammed, and other Muslim leaders have insisted that Gitonga should be released as it was a case of mistaken identity. Gitonga, who was first admitted at Aga Khan Hospital after being shot by police, claims he had gone to the mall to drop the daughters of his employer. He said he managed to escape but was shot by the police who arrested him.

Gitonga, who was under police guard at the Aga Khan hospital was on Sunday moved to the Forces Memorial Hospital where he is still recuperating. His wife has claimed she has not been allowed to see or even talk to her husband.

Yesterday, Khadija said her cousin Mohammed Sayed and her husband’s cousin Nagi Jaffar who were arrested last Sunday at the Aga Khan hospital where they had gone to visit her husband are yet to be released from the Gigiri police station where they are being held.

Police spokesman Zipporah Mboroki has said she did not know why the police were holding the suspects.

A source close to the investigations yesterday told the Star that the police had handed over the suspect to Military Intelligence officers who were questioning the man.

Efforts to get a comment from the ATPU boss Boniface Mwaniki were futile as he did not answer his phone yesterday.

Another man being held by the police has been identified as Yusuf Mohammed who was also arrested at the JKIA on Monday.

Skip trials at own peril Fatou Bensouda warns Deputy President William Ruto

    Updated Thursday, September 26th 2013 at 23:27 GMT +3

By FELIX OLICK at The Hague

International Criminal Court Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda has fired a warning salvo to Deputy President William Ruto that he risks arrest if he skips trial proceedings without permission of the judges.

The warning comes just days after the office of the prosecutor suggested somebody else should be sworn in on a temporary basis to discharge Ruto’s duties as deputy head of state.

“The Prosecution notes Ruto is not here ( ICC) voluntarily, but on compulsion of summons and risks arrest if he defaults,” Bensouda warned as she opposed Ruto’s plea to the Appeals Chamber to lift an order compelling him to be in court.

The Chief Prosecutor maintained Ruto is an accused person before the ICC and while presumed innocent, “cannot expect that life would continue normally”.

“The effect of the confirmation of charges is that a trial will ensue in the normal course and the accused, if not in custody, will have to make the necessary arrangements to attend that trial,” she charged.

On Monday evening, Ruto’s defence counsel Karim Khan lodged a fresh request to the Appeals Chamber to excuse his client from being physically present in court during his trial. Ruto pointed to the one-week adjournment following the bloody Westgate Shopping Mall (Nairobi) terror attack, arguing such breaks would result in delays in proceedings or interruptions of witness testimony.

But in her response on Thursday, Bensouda insisted Khan’s new argument including the tragic events at Westgate that led to the adjournment Monday do not change the reasoning of the Appeals Chamber’s decision.

    Continuous presence

“The new facts raised have no bearing on the Appeals Chamber’s reasons for granting suspensive effect. If the trial continues without Ruto and the appeal succeeds, the results will be difficult to correct and the consequences may be irreversible. Therefore, the request should be rejected,” the Chief Prosecutor said.

For the first time this week, President Uhuru Kenyatta also requested Trial Chamber V(b) to excuse him from continuous presence at trial, citing his new roles as president.

Bensouda is yet to react to the application by the President.

The ruling by the five-judge Bench and headed by the ICC president Judge Sang-Hyun Song is expected soon.
