Reinfeldt’s ancestor ‘dandy American ringleader’

Fredrik Reinfeldt pulled off quite a trick getting himself elected prime minister in times of flamboyant economic growth. Looking at his family tree, maybe there is more to come from the man whose great great grandfather was a circus director from New York. Tabloid Aftonbladet delved into the archives to come up with the goods on the 19th century ringleader.
John Hood was born around 1850 to a black mother and a governor from Borneo, if we are to believe the version put forward by a man who also claimed to be a cannibal and a connoisseur of dogs, cats and rats.
Reinfeldt’s ancestor cut quite a dash on the Stockholm scene in the late 1880s and was said to be a great hit with the ladies. One newspaper, writing about Hood in 1880, describes him as, “an elegant vagabond with fine manners, a real dandy with a golden bracelet and a distinguished, stately appearance”.
Emma Dorothea Reinfeldt was certainly smitten. In 1882 the 21-year-old girl gave birth to Hood’s son, John Reinfeldt, the new prime minister’s great grandfather. John Reinfeldt’s mother had come to Sweden from Latvia, ostensibly as a maid, though an expert Aftonbladet spoke to considers it more likely that she was part of a travelling carnival.
As was customary for children with absent fathers, John Reinfeldt was handed over to a foster home.
John Hood had come to Sweden via England and Norway, picking up tricks along the way. By the time he reached Stockholm his circus act included a flea circus, a mermaid, “wolf people” and “Zulu kaffirs”.
In 1880 Hood was stabbed in the head and arm by one of his “Zulu kaffirs”. The police, who had recently revealed Hood’s “mermaid” to be a fraud, took little pity on him.
In 1884 Hood eloped with another young Swedish woman. The pair were tracked down in Hull, northern England, where the Swedish consul lay in wait to send the girl back home.
Reinfeldt’s ancestor was photographed in London a year later all decked out in fine clothes and a top hat. According to Aftonbladet, that is where the trail ends.

I släkten Reinfeldt sägs i dag om John Hood att han var amerikan, från New York, mulatt och cirkusdirektör på tillfällig genomresa.
Själv sa John Hood – ibland – att han var son till guvernören på Borneo och att hans mor var negress. Andra gånger kunde han säga att modern var “ett holländskt fruntimmer”, då kunde fadern vara guvernör på Java.
John Hood stack ut i 1880-talets Stockholm. Han blev både känd och omtyckt.
“Ståtlig och smidig figur”
Med sin mörka hy, sina exotiska ansiktsdrag och belevade manér beskrivs han dessutom som en framgångsrik kvinnokarl.
Ovanligt ståtlig, och man skulle kunna säga även vacker karl, enligt Hufvudstadsbladet i augusti 1884.
I tidningarna skrivs att han är “idealet af negerskönhet”, att han har en ståtlig och smidig figur, och “kläder sig synnerligen vårdat och för sig oklanderligt, nästan nobelt”.
Eller som Åbo Underrättelser uttryckte det 1880:
En elegant vagabond med “fina manér”, en riktig sprätt, med guldarmband och distingerat, ståtligt utseende. En gentleman.
Kanske var det detta som lockade den unga flickan Emma Dorothea Reinfeldt i John Hoods armar. Den 26 oktober 1882 födde hon, 21 år gammal, hans son, John Reinfeldt – Fredrik Reinfeldts farfars far.
Emma Reinfeldt födde pojken på Allmänna BB i Stockholm. Hon sa inte vem fadern var.
I journalanteckningarna från BB uppger Emma Reinfeldt att hon vistats i huvudstaden sedan “några dagar tillbaka”. Egentligen bodde hon i Örebro.
Kallade sig tjänsteflicka
Det var vanligt förr att ogifta gravida kvinnor reste till storstan för att föda – då slapp de skammen hemma. Faderlösa barn lämnades ofta bort till fosterhem eller barnhus. Så också John Reinfeldt.
Emma Reinfeldt själv föddes 1861 i Gross Eckau i Kurland. I dag heter staden Iecava, en fattig stad i Lettland, söder om Riga.
Hon var tonåring när hon kom till Sverige och uppgav att hon hade jobb som tjänsteflicka.
Richard Brun, konsthistoriker och expert på resandesläkter, tror det är en vit lögn.
– Att en ensam ung kvinna reser från Lettland till Sverige för att arbeta som hembiträde är inte troligt. Jag tror hon var här för att resa runt som tivoliartist. Men det säger hon inte, för då sätts hon i häkte. I stället säger hon tjänsteflicka.
Hur länge Emma Reinfeldts kärlekssaga med John Hood varade är okänt. Några år senare gifte hon sig med Andreas Karlsson – också han i tivolibranschen.
-Det stärker min bild av att Emma Reinfeldt egentligen var artist och att John Hood inte var en tillfällig kärlekshistoria, säger Richard Brun.
John Hood hade kvinnor både före och efter unga fröken Reinfeldt.
Damerna, i synnerhet, har funnit honom intressant, inte minst därför att han är “färgad” – kaffebrun. Måhända har färgen varit en särskild orsak till att han fallit damerna i smaken.

Men det var inte John Hoods attraktionskraft på kvinnorna artikeln i första hand handlade om. Den ville beskriva en “ganska förslagen äventyrare”:
Vid unga år kom han som matros till England, där någon företagsam “gycklare” sannolikt fick honom om hand och använde honom till åtskilligt hokus pokus. Han började emellertid snart att arbeta för egen räkning. För något år sedan uppträdde han i Norge som ormtjusare, därefter i Sverige, i landsorten, som människoätare och slukare av hundar, kattor och råttor.
Men John Hood gjorde mer än att visa upp sig själv som kannibal. Han visade “vargmänniskor” och han kunde uppträda som “zulukafferhöfvding” tillsammans med ett gäng “zulukaffrer”.
“Hwilka i sjelfwa werket woro amerikanska negrer”, avslöjar en tidning.
John Hood imponerade också på stockholmarna genom att visa dem en levande sjöjungfru.
Men det tricket avslöjade polisen. Sjöjungfrun kläddes av – och visade sig vara en kvinna från Stettin. Fiskstjärten var ett laméfodral fyllt med halm.
Polisen visade ingen nåd
Sommaren 1880 kom han i slagsmål med en av sina “zulukaffrer”. John Hood knivhöggs i huvudet och armen.
-Hos pantlånaren Westerberg, berättar ett vittne.
“Zulukaffern” påstås ha satt kniven i statsministerns anfader sedan han känt sig lurad och övergiven av honom.
Polisen ryckte ut under knivslagsmålet hos pantlånaren. Och eftersom polisen hade “sjöjungfrun” i färskt minne visade konstaplarna denna gång ingen nåd.
-Polisen reducerade honom helt tvärt till en kaffebrun industririddare från Borneo, berättar vittnet.
Knivhuggen gick djupt. John Hood blev en tid inlagd på Sabbatsbergs sjukhus.
Ärren fick han leva med, men de vackra anletsdragen, stilen, behöll han. Han fortsatte attrahera kvinnor och män med skönhet – och loppcirkus.
Kärleksparet gick ombord
Åtminstone fram till 1884 tillhörde han av allt att döma resandefolket.
Men en natt 1884 försvann han plötsligt.
Med ett ungt vackert fruntimmer, för vilken han länge slagit sina krokar och som till fullo besvarat hans ömma låga, skriver Hufvudstadsbladet.
Den här gången var det inte Emma Reinfeldt – henne hade han lämnat – utan en ny kvinna.
Med flickans hela sparkapital, 300 kronor, hoppade kärleksparet på ångaren Flamingo. En tid senare gick de iland i hamnstaden Hull på Englands östkust.
Där möttes de av den svenske konsuln.
Flickans föräldrar hade anat vart de var på väg och telegraferat konsuln och bett honom skicka hem deras dotter.

The Apostle John wrote, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” (John 3:16–17, NIV) John also wrote, “Dear friends, let us love one another for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” (1 John 4:7–8, NIV)
Saint Augustine says that one must be able to decipher the difference between love and lust. Lust, according to Saint Augustine, is an overindulgence, but to love and be loved is what he has sought for his entire life. He even says, “I was in love with love.” Finally, he does fall in love and is loved back, by God. Saint Augustine says the only one who can love you truly and fully is God, because love with a human only allows for flaws such as “jealousy, suspicion, fear, anger, and contention.” According to Saint Augustine, to love God is “to attain the peace which is yours.” (Saint Augustine’s Confessions)
Christian theologians see God as the source of love, which is mirrored in humans and their own loving relationships. Influential Christian theologian C.S. Lewis wrote a book called The Four Loves. Benedict XVI wrote his first encyclical on “God is love”. He said that a human being, created in the image of God, who is love, is able to practice love; to give himself to God and others (agape) and by receiving and experiencing God’s love in contemplation (eros). This life of love, according to him, is the life of the saints such as Teresa of Calcutta and the Blessed Virgin Mary and is the direction Christians take when they believe that God loves them.[27]
In Christianity the practical definition of love is best summarised by St. Thomas Aquinas, who defined love as “to will the good of another,” or to desire for another to succeed.[10] This is the explanation of the Christian need to love others, including their enemies. As Thomas Aquinas explains, Christian love is motivated by the need to see others succeed in life, to be good people.
JudaismIn Hebrew, Ahava is the most commonly used term for both interpersonal love and love between God and God’s creations. Chesed, often translated as loving-kindness, is used to describe many forms of love between human beings.
The commandment to love other people is given in the Torah, which states, “Love your neighbor like yourself” (Leviticus 19:18). The Torah’s commandment to love God “with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your might” (Deuteronomy 6:5) is taken by the Mishnah (a central text of the Jewish oral law) to refer to good deeds, willingness to sacrifice one’s life rather than commit certain serious transgressions, willingness to sacrifice all of one’s possessions, and being grateful to the Lord despite adversity (tractate Berachoth 9:5). Rabbinic literature differs as to how this love can be developed, e.g., by contemplating divine deeds or witnessing the marvels of nature. As for love between marital partners, this is deemed an essential ingredient to life: “See life with the wife you love” (Ecclesiastes 9:9). The biblical book Song of Solomon is considered a romantically phrased metaphor of love between God and his people, but in its plain reading, reads like a love song. The 20th-century Rabbi Eliyahu Eliezer Dessler is frequently quoted as defining love from the Jewish point of view as “giving without expecting to take” (from his Michtav me-Eliyahu, Vol. 1).
