Throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s, the psyche of the ordinary Kenyan was worked up by myths spread through the capitalist media and politicians alike to the effect that Communists are bad people who will take your milking cow if you have two and give it to your neighbour. In the 60s, the Socialist-leaning Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Raila’s father, was constantly demonized and portrayed as “dangerous” by his opponents, especially those who surrounded Kenyatta. When the senior Odinga formed his socialist Kenya People’s Union to compete for political power, he was immediately banished and confined to political limbo together with his political allies. After flag independence, Odinga managed to send numerous Kenyans to the former Soviet Union and Eastern European countries for further studies but when they came back from studies, they were routinely rounded up, followed by security personnel, arrested and jailed on tramped up charges or even forced into exile.
This hostile treatment of Kenyans who studied in the former Eastern European countries during the 70s led to these students failing to return to Kenya after studies, choosing instead to settle in other countries in Europe to prevent their lives from being wasted. Raila is one of these students who were sent by his father to study in East Germany and when he came back to Kenya, he naturally had the tag of a “Communist” by virtue of having studied in a “Communist” country. Throughout the 80s, hundreds of Kenyans who suffered political persecution at the hands of the Moi dictatorship were left-leaning students or their lecturers mainly from Nairobi or Kenyatta Universities. Scholars such as Ngugi wa Thiong’o or lecturers including the late Dr Mukaru Nganga, were all forced into exile because they were regarded as dangerous. Political prisoners such as Mwandawiro Mghanga and Onyango Oloo were sent to prison because of their left-leaning views on politics.
Indeed, Kenya was converted into a one-Party dictatorship by the Moi dictatorship on the eve of the formation of the Kenya Socialist Alliance by a group of politicians who were regarded as socialists and who were being led by Oginga Odinga. The underground Mwakenya Movement, which could be awarded the ultimate prize when it came to underground movements that gave the Moi dictatorship headache, was fundamentally Leftist and, by extension, “Communist.”
Throughout the Kenyatta and Moi dictatorships (at least up to the early 90s), the existence of the Cold War encouraged American and Western Imperialism to try as much as possible to drive a wedge between leftist-leaning Kenyans and the pro-western, pro-market government that controlled the State. As Moi violated human rights with impunity, torturing opponents, detaining them without trial and sending them into exile, Western Imperialism simply looked the other way because they could not afford to have a “Communist” in charge of Kenya. This partly explains the lengthy political persecution and marginalization of Oginga Odinga and other Kenyan Leftists by the regimes of Kenyatta and Daniel arap Moi.
Although Socialist ideas were never made available to the Kenyan masses for evaluation, the general image of Communists that was planted in the minds of millions of Kenyans through propaganda was negative in a way that millions of Kenyans became difficult to convince with the ideas of Socialism simply because they had been brought up politically to believe that Socialism and Communism were not just dangerous but evil and had to be avoided. Until his death, Oginga Odinga never denounced his belief in Socialism while at the same time, he never got the opportunity to sell his ideas to the Kenyan public. When Raila Odinga entered the political scene, it appeared, in the eyes of critics, as if he had inherited his father’s image as “A Communist” although Raila had never before propagated Communist ideas openly through a political Party, a political program or any other means.
FORD-Kenya, in which Raila sat as a Committee member, was not Socialist or Communist. When he quit the Party to join NDP, Raila did not convert the Party into a Socialist/Communist ideological mouthpiece but opted for a Liberal approach to politics. He then joined KANU, which remained a rightwing Party under Moi. When he quit once again to join the LDP, he did not just avoid talk about “Communism” but also ensured that the Party became a member of the International Organization of Liberals. There is no single Political program that can be associated with Raila that preaches Communism, or Socialism for that matter.
During election campaigns, Raila released the ODM Manifesto that clearly outlined his politics and it was neither Socialist nor Communist. It was a promarket, pro-capitalist program that vowed to maintain the political and economic status quo in Kenya if Raila came to power. During his numerous trips abroad to meet Kenyans in Diaspora and other agents of big business who might have been worried about the prospects of Raila taking over power in Kenya, Raila constantly assured his listeners that his government would maintain the “market system” of government, complete with privatization programs and acceptance of neo-liberal policies. By making such telling public declarations, Raila was selling himself to big businesses that control Kenya’s economy and whose controllers had the capacity to stop him from seizing power using whatever means available and Raila knew this. He had to come clean on the charges that he was a “Communist” and he did it in style.
Despite all of these indicators, the PNU propaganda machine continued to churn out blatant lies that Raila was a “Communist” who would convert Kenya into a Socialist country if he came to power, invite the Russians to colonize the country (even though Stalinism had collapsed in the former Soviet Union in 1990) while a host of other propaganda material was manufactured to demonize Raila and his “Communism.” This cheap demonization strategy did not work because eventually Raila was elected President of Kenya and PNU hardliners had to rig elections through ECK to keep Raila out of power, creating a huge crisis in Kenya.

S. K. Macharia cries all night as UHURU’s K24 raids his staff and CCK shuts down 6 transmitters
The Kenyan DAILY POSTMedia News 06:03
Saturday, February 02, 2013 – After a massive raid by Uhuru Kenyatta’s K24, Royal media services is in yet more trouble, six RMS broadcast transmitters have been shut down by Communication Commission of Kenya (CCK) for operating without licenses.
The stations transmitters located in Nakuru, Narok, Mukuyuni (Makueni) and Mabrui (Malindi) are also said to have been put up illegally and were using unauthorized frequencies. Some of them are erected in non-designated sites thus causing a lot of interferences and hindrances to the aviation industry.
According to CCK, “the six are part of 17 transmitters put up illegally by Royal Media Services in the recent past without a license from CCK, and therefore in contravention of the law.”
CCK also indicated that at least 22 other FM stations and 2 broadcasting stations owned by RMS may be closed down after the court rules in the CCK favor.

Kikuyu Ruling thugs threatening leaders from Primitive tribes using Kimaiyo( Lumbwa) of new Farcist Kenya Police Force (which has resisted reforms>CORD Presidential candidate Raila Odinga yesterday said he would ignore a directive by the police boss David Kimaiyo that politicians should not discuss the issue of land.
Inspector General Kimaiyo was speaking yesterday morning at the opening of a national training workshop for election security for Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission officials and police officers.
“Land should not be one of the issues on the campaign trail because it is so emotive and can trigger violence. All politicians should be self-respecting and should, forthwith stop dwelling on issues that will cause tensions and animosities,” Kimaiyo said.
“We ask the leaders not to outdo each other on issues that are emotive, including land. They can find other issues to campaign on,” Kimaiyo said.
“The 2007 elections were characterized by the worst violence since independence and we have noticed our shortcomings. In order to change, we must move away from the past way of doing things,” said Kimaiyo.
But the Prime Minister insisted that land reform was an important issue that needed to be addressed in the campaigns for the March 4 elections.
“Police cannot prescribe what we should or should not discuss. The directive also negates free speech which is guaranteed in the constitution,” said Raila in Migori on a campaign tour.
Raila said land reform was one of the Agenda Four issues that needed to be addressed before elections and accused a clique of frustrating the gazettement of the Land Commission.
“Uhuru and Ruto are part of the land problem in Kenya, an not the solution,” said Raila. Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto are the presidential ticket for the Jubilee coalition while Raila is on the Cord ticket with Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka.
Uhuru’s spokesman Munyori Buku welcomed the police directive. He said politicians should state how they will tackle the land issue instead of using it to propagate hate against the Jubilee presidential candidate.
“Mr Kenyatta has never politicized land. Those who have done so are known and are Raila Odinga and Moses Wetang’ula. The Inspector General has done the right thing to demand that only politicians with sober minds discuss land issues,” Buku told The Star.
“There are institutions formulated expressly to handle cases of injustice concerning land,” National Cohesion and Integration Commission chairman Mzalendo Kibunjia said on Monday.
“We must not accept leaders who make careless comments on the basis of issues touching on historical injustice such as land.” The Raila Odinga Presidential Campaign chief Eliud Owalo accused the Jubilee coalition of trying to stifle debate.
“The resolution of historical injustices and land issues are central to bringing lasting peace and national cohesion in Kenya and every presidential aspirant must explain to Kenyans their ability to resolve these issues. These warnings are a clear intention by a section of government to censor debate in the presidential campaign and protect some presidential aspirants from public scrutiny,” Owalo said in a statement.
“It would therefore appear that the purpose of these warnings is to ensure that the Jubilee coalition and its presidential candidate are not called to account on issues of historical injustices and land,” Owalo said.
According to Justin Muturi of the Centre for Multiparty Democracy, an ally of Uhuru, land should be dealt with from a policy perspective rather than politicians seeking to make capital out of it.
“The Inspector General’s directive is a welcome move because Kenyans will remember that all the clashes in this country have revolved around land. At this time when it’s so close to elections, it is possible to inflame passions,” said Muturi.
Law Society of Kenya CEO Apollo Mboya asked Kimaiyo to be specific on what could not be discussed. “The topic of land is an emotive one but, remember, who owns what land is an everyday court litigation. Any directive by the police has to be clear on the context and the aspect of land the politicians should not talk about instead of a blanket ban,” Mboya said.
Last week Uhuru called on security agencies to investigate Raila for propagating hate speech. TNA national chairman Johnson Sakaja also petitioned NCIC to take action against CORD principal Moses Wetang’ula over his claims that the Kenyatta family was selling illegally acquired land to fund the Jubilee presidential campaign.
Lawyer Pheroze Nowrojee also disagreed with Kimaiyo, saying that police cannot decide what can be discussed. “The police do not decide the public interest debates and have no powers to gag any debate. If parties or individuals break the law, Kimaiyo must act promptly and impartially. Many issues are emotive such as IDPs, the ICC, extra-judicial killings and nominations. Neither the police nor any other authority can censor or exclude these subjects from debate during the elections or at any other time,” said Nowrojee.
A the launch of the Jubilee manifesto on Sunday, Uhuru spent about ten out of 37 minutes of his speech tracing land ownership patterns from colonial times until after independence.
Uhuru said he wanted every Kenyan to have a land title including the residents of Kibera. “On Sunday Kenyatta candidly addressed the land reforms and perhaps that is what we should be hearing from politicians instead of targeting particular people,” Buku stated yesterday.
The chairperson of Elections Observation Group Kennedy Masime said it was preposterous to bar campaign teams from discussing the land issue.
“There is no way you can proscribe discussions on land because there is a whole Chapter on Land in the constitution. In selling their bids, the politicians have to get out there and explain to the electorate how they are going to deal with this perennial problem of land,” said Masime.
The ELOG chairperson said land was important given that Kenya’s economy is still reliant on agriculture. “Apart from agriculture, the incoming administration must address the issues of real property and the resettlement of IDPs who are still living in camps. So there is no way you can ignore land,” Masime said.
How State House Built Royal Media and Why They Want it Shutdown NOW
By robertalai On Sunday, February 3rd, 2013
The case of Royal Media Services (RMS) vs Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) is not as complicated as we would want it to look. The recent shutdown of more than 6-booster transmitters in in Nakuru, Narok, Mukuyuni (Makueni) and Mabrui (Malindi) was not a purely regulatory matter as Ndemo would love us to believe.
This is how it started. In 2005, President Kibaki was informed by the intelligence that the Banana (YES) side was going to loose to the Orange (NO) side in the referendum. The ground was tilted in favour of Raila, Kalonzo, Ruto and other opponents of the new constitution. So something needed to be done to greatly turn the tide against Raila and his side.
Kibaki then called a meeting at state house attended by Bitange Ndemo (PS Information), Charles Njoroge (CCK), Mutahi Kagwe (the Minister of Information), John Michuki (Internal Security Minister), Francis Kimemia (internal security), S.K. Macharia (Royal Media Chairman), Michael Gichangi (Intelligence boss) and Francis Muthaura (Civil Service boss) among others. Out of those present, PS Bitange Ndemo has remained the only person outside Mt Kenya Mafia who is very loyal and close to State House (one of the few who know about illegal transfer of Grand Regency to Kibaki’s family).
The meeting reached a decision to award Royal Media Services extra frequencies to cover almost anywhere in country. Royal Media now cover more areas than any broadcaster has ever covered. Basically the group has a foot-print which covers almost every corner of the country. The extra frequencies were allocated at the orders of State House. It was not something to be debated. So after the overnight allocation of frequencies irregularly to RMS and being the astute businessman he is, S.K regularised the acquisitions after few days. He formalised the acquisitions with CCK and made sure that almost all the allocated frequencies were not “illegal”. Only few boosters (transmitters supporting other transmitters) were on frequencies which were not regularised.
Later, S.K. grabbed some frequencies through his connections at State House. This made RMS now control a market of more than 51%. Some of the newly grabbed frequencies with direct assistance of CCK, Ministry of Information and Statehouse were not regularised or CCK advised that they be left in a pending state.
Apart from pushing for the allocation of extra frequencies and allowing Royal Media to grab some, state house also pushed for the allocation of adverts from state corporation to RMS. This ensured that the new broadcaster was well funded.
RMS then embarked on a process of almost exclusively poaching staff from Standard Group which was considered to support the Orange team so much. The media house poached tens of staff members in a go that KTN was almost crippled. Later when they saw that KTN was still on its feet, Michuki personally ordered a raid to finish the broadcaster claiming that they were about to publish something regarding the first family. This was just an excuse.
So that is how RMS expanded so fast and became the dominant media house in the country.
Problem is that S.K. Macharia saw his empire as so big that no one could match it. When he appeared on Forbes list of the African Millionaires to Watch in 2013, the whole Media Group celebrated like it was an endorsement from some god.
S.K. toyed with the idea of joining politics but he thought that he might not win much support from opposing tribes considering that Kenyan politics is so tribalised. So he decided to enter in to politics softly using a backdoor.
He decided to support Raila Odinga for president. He declared at a rally in Nyeri that he will use all his resources to support CORD. The Star newspaper wrote, “I will use my media outlets to back Raila – SK Macharia” That headline woke opponents of Raila in Jubilee, Amani and Eagle coalition. The only close competitor to CORD is Jubilee with Uhuru Kenyatta being one of the few leaders from Mount Kenya who is very very close to state house.
So a meeting was called at state house. Present were Francis Kimemia, Uhuru Kenyatta, PS Bitange Ndemo, CCK Chairman (Ben Gituku), Michael Gichangi and Nick Wanjohi. President Kibaki is also said to have been in the meeting which resolved to contain RMS after the Nyeri declaration.
A plan to fix RMS was mooted and it was to be multi-pronged. Uhuru was to be enabled through state coffers and allocation of advertising spend in enabling Mediamax to poach personnel from Royal Media services. PS Kimemia also ordered that Ndemo should ensure that all frequencies held by RMS “illegally” be immediately taken away from them. Government allocation in adverts and promotions or public information campaigns were ordered scaled down.
So the actualization of the plan started last week and it is going to be hastened. Mediamax has in just the past few days poached more than 32 key staff from Royal media including those in technical and operations department. Mediamax is offering some of the new catches as much as 300% raise in salaries. This is not realistic considering that the group which owns The People, Meru FM, Milele FM and K24 TV control just 2.2% of the Kenyan media market. The investment might take as long as 3 years to be gained back.
3 days later, CCK has moved in and switched off Royal Media transmitters in areas where CORD is just trying to gain meaningful support. From Monday, RMS will see termination of advertising contracts while the push to close more ethnic stations will be hastened by PS Ndemo.
These actions will be pushed until after the elections. Though RMS might win the legal war through courts, State House functionaries will not honour most of the court decisions as Kibaki has done before without blinking an eye.
Speaking to two former bosses of CCK, they said that they believe that the timing is very wrong even if the intention was to be good.
In fact one said, “timing is everything. If I were still the CCK boss, I would not have done this now. Even for the current CCK boss, he looks like a cheap puppet of politicians by pulling such a move. This is wrong.”
Boys, your man lost the race a long time ago. Forget fake Kenyan figures or leaked embassy polls, whether true or not.
“While they all lambasted Kibaki as an election thief the truth was 180 degrees in the opposite direction;it wasn’t even a long or complicated story. Odinga rigged massively! The rigging ranged from deceased voters casting their votes, polling station staff colluding with agents to mark ballot papers of those who did not turn up to vote and illiterate people being guided to vote for a certain presidential candidate, among others forms of irregularities. ”
http://karanjazplace.blogspot.com/2012/10/false-narratives-distorting-our.html
Simply,he’s not winning now, neither did he win in 07! This time it won’t even be close;a leaked EU poll has him losing by 700 k votes. IDK,if the poll is genuine
Actually Kenya needs socialism. This man eat man society is so unjust, with all wealth and power concentrated in the hands of the happy few, and the large majority of Kenyans very poor. In Kenya there should be a redistribution of wealth. Poor Kikuyus, luos, etc. should work together to defeat their real ennemies, that is the rich and corrupt upperclass. But these rich politicians and businesspeople use the ethnic division to rule.
