More than a year after she murdered her two children, Nyambu, a Kenyan woman, was quietly deported to Kenya without the huge media attention that was witnessed soon after the bodies of her kids were discovered in a lake in Sigtuna municipality.
The decision to deport the Kenyan woman was taken by the Swedish court which found her guilty of double murder and which recommended that the woman be deported to her home country after a stint at a mental rehabilitation centre in Stockholm. A subsequent appeal by Nyambu to overturn her deportation was rejected by the courts.
In lodging the appeal, the Kenyan woman had argued that she needs to be allowed to remain in Sweden due to lack of proper rehab facilities in Kenya for persons in her mental situation. She had also argued that she needed to be physically present in Sweden so that she could visit the grave where her kids are buried. The kids were buried in one grave and in a single coffin. Unfortunately, the courts did not find the arguments strong enough and thus dismissed the appeal.
Although the decision to deport Nyambu was not strange, it was seen as draconian because not only had she resided in Sweden for more than six years but she was also a holder of a permanent Swedish residence permit. There are numerous cases in which Immigrants who have committed murders in Sweden have ended up with jail sentences and allowed back into society after serving. The fact that Nyambu was found to have been mentally unstable at the time she committed the double murder ought to have worked to her advantage to be allowed to stay in Sweden (for further treatment) but this did not happen.
According to Lars Johansson, a Swedish lawyer who spoke to KSB, Nyambu’s case may have been different because the murders involved small innocent children. Lars said that the welfare of children in Sweden is taken very seriously and after she murdered her children, “the position of the Swedish law is that she may still be a threat to other children in Sweden” even after going through rehab. For this reason, she was still deemed a danger to children in society and this view could have influenced the decision to deport her after rehab.
A Kenyan who used to visit Nyambu in rehab told KSB that she had become very remorseful after she was sentenced. “She could not understand how she murdered her children”, the Kenyan told KSB. “She believed that she had been taken over by the devil at the time she killed the children”, the contact added.
Interestingly, very few Kenyans seem to be sympathetic to Nyambu. According to an opinion poll conducted by KSB, 90% of Kenya-Stockholmers interviewed preferred that Nyambu be jailed for life in Sweden. Out of this percentage, 70% could have recommended the death penalty if they were in a position to decide the case while 30% thought that it was better to keep her alive so that she could live with the consequences of murdering two innocent children.
