Nyanza leads in DRUG ABUSE ……… NACADA
Tuesday 9th October 2012 – A survey indicates that Nyanza tops in drug abuse in Kenya, with almost half of the national prevalence in illegal drinks and narcotics abuse.
The survey done by the National Campaign Against Drug Abuse shows that Nyanza leads in the abuse of heroin, cocaine and other illicit drugs.
The province also leads in the manufacturing and consumption of changáa and busaa.
Releasing the results conducted this year, Nacada’s programme manager John Muturi said the high consumption of illicit brew in the region has affected economic growth and social forms in the region.
In changáa consumption, Nyanza has a10 per cent prevalence, which is above the 7.2 national averages among people aged between 15 to 65 years.
It has a 10.2 per cent consumption of other local brews, putting it at par with the national average.
The study revealed that Nyanza residents aged between 15 to 65 have over 70 per cent access against the national average that stands at 19 per cent and almost double the national average in their access to other drugs.
Nacada revealed the survey in a workshop for leaders attended by DCs, NGO representatives and country commissioner from the province.
