LONDON, Aug 19 – WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange called on US President Barack Obama to stop its “witch-hunt” against his whistleblowing website, as he gave a speech from Ecuador’s embassy in London on Sunday.
“I ask President Obama to do the right thing, the United States must renounce its witch-hunt against WikiLeaks,” said Assange, making his first public statement since he was granted political asylum by Ecuador.
Speaking from a balcony at the embassy in an upmarket district of London, Assange praised the “courage” shown by the Latin American nation’s President Rafael Correa for granting him asylum.
“I thank President Correa for the courage he has shown in considering and in granting me political asylum,” Assange told journalists and a handful of his supporters gathered outside the embassy.
The 41-year-old Australian walked into the embassy two months ago after exhausting all legal avenues in Britain in his fight against extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning over alleged sex crimes.
Assange claims the accusations against him are politically motivated and insists that the United States wants to put him on trial for divulging state secrets.

SYDNEY, Aug 20 – An Australian radio host was Monday taken off air after taunting the mother of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange with a Nazi slogan, screaming at her “Sieg Heil! Sieg Heil! Sieg Heil!”.
John-Michael Howson, co-host of 3AW’s Sunday morning programme, was suspended for four weeks after the incident in which he was unhappy after Christine Assange cancelled a pre-planned phone interview with him.
“I won’t be doing an interview with you because you’re acting like a pig,” said Christine Assange, whose Australian son Julian is at the centre of a diplomatic storm between Britain and Ecuador.
Howson responded by screaming on air: “Sieg Heil! Sieg Heil! Sieg Heil!” as Assange hung up the phone.
“We’ve told him in no uncertain terms that it was completely unacceptable behaviour and we don’t condone it in any way,” 3AW general manager Shane Healy said.
On Sunday, Howson said he linked Christine Assange to the biggest example of censorship that he could think of — the Nazi regime — because she had denied him the chance to speak to her about her son.
But the veteran broadcaster apologised Monday in a statement read on-air and posted on the website of the Fairfax Media-owned station.
“Yesterday on the Sunday morning programme we discussed the matter of Julian Assange and his decision to seek sanctuary in the embassy of Ecuador in London,” he said.
“During that discussion I made offensive comments by citing the Nazi salute. I unreservedly apologise for saying what I said.
“I did not intend to imply that our guests or anyone shares the views of the Nazi party or seeks to control free speech.”

Mr Uhuru Kenyatta has lost a fresh bid to determine whether three witnesses whose testimony he discredited and believes secured confirmation of charges against him will testify during trial.
The International Criminal Court judges rejected the Deputy Prime Minister’s application to order the Prosecutor to confirm to his defence whether it would rely on witnesses coded 4, 11 and 12 at trial.
Uhuru suffered the latest setback as the countdown to the trial beckons in two weeks when the first submissions by the parties establishing undisputed facts of the case are due.
The three protected witnesses, whose identities ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda disclosed to Uhuru on August 1, have been the subject of vicious sparring between the prosecution and Uhuru’s defence.
Uhuru has sought to brand witnesses 4, 11 and 12 as liars, claiming they initially attempted to extort money from him and only turned to the prosecution when he refused to bribe them.
However, the DPM who claims they tried to extort from him and went to ICC when he refused to yield, is free to table evidence, including visual, audio and written word to prove to the court that this actually true.
Trial Chamber V judges agreed with the prosecution that the request was an attempt to obtain information earlier than stipulated in the schedule for the trial due to start on April 11 next year.
Uhuru’s lawyer, Steven Kay, told judges during confirmation of charges hearing last September the prosecution anchored its case against Uhuru on what was claimed by the three protected witnesses. “However, two of them, numbers 11 and 12, were first interviewed by the defence team in 2011 and gave a fully exculpatory account to that now relied upon by the prosecution,” he said.
Kay then told Pre-Trial Chamber II judges their versions “utterly contradicts the account that they have tried to advance in this court”.
“Those protected witnesses, numbers 11 and 12, then attempted to extort money from my defence team and offered to pervert the course of justice, but they were thrown out of our offices,” he said.
Kay added: “In pursuit of money, which has been their sole motivation, they discovered the ICC prosecutor offered better packages than we did. So that is where they went to provide a lying and utterly false account.”
The third protected witness, Uhuru argues, has an account motivated apparently “by his desire for a life abroad and living in luxury.”
Stray dogs feasting on dead kikuyus>Residents of Thingithu estate in Nanyuki town woke up to a rude shock yesterday morning when they found dogs feasting on bodies buried in a nearby grave.
The dogs dug up the shallow grave where the 40 people had been buried in a mass grave. A witness said Nanyuki Municipal Council employees dumped ten bodies in the grave on Saturday.
“They came with a tractor and dug a very shallow grave and dumped the bodies only for them to be removed by dogs,” said the resident. The graveyard was abandoned years ago after it filled up. Nanyuki Mayor Isaac Mathenge said he had ordered staff to bury the bodies in “a descent manner”.
“In addition to burying the bodies, I have also ordered for investigation into the matter,” the mayor said on the phone. Public health officers in the town panicked on learning of the case. ” I am not aware and I am liaising with the council chief officers for action to be taken immediately.
This is very wrong, said Laikipia East district public health officer Samson Marangu. These are the bodies that are disposed by Municipal councils after they fail to be claimed by their relatives. The residents lamented that it could be a health hazard, considering that this is a rainy season.
