  5. Police arrest hit-and-run suspect
    Published: 02 Feb 2012 03:54 GMT+1

Police have arrested a 39-year-old man suspected of the hit-and-run killing of 54-year-old Jeff Mwangi Kwirikia, the father of popular Norwegian-Kenyan singer Stella Mwangi.

Police said the 39-year-old turned up at the local police station with his wife on Thursday. Police officers then accompanied the couple to a house in Jessheim, south-eastern Norway.

In the adjoining garage, police found a Citroen Berlingo van with extensive damage to the front windscreen and the right-hand side of the vehicle. Police on Wednesday said they were looking for a van that matched this description.

The house where the van was found is occupied by the suspect’s parents.

The 39-year-old has now been charged with manslaughter, police said. If found guilty, he could be jailed for up to three years, or up to six years under aggravating circumstances.

At a press conference on Thursday afternoon, police said they remained unsure whether the suspect was the person behind the wheel at the time of the collision. An investigation is ongoing.

Jeff Mwangi Kwirikia died from his injuries after he was run over by a van on county road 454. The driver fled the scene.

The van was last seen headed in a northbound direction on the stretch of the Trondheim road between Dal and Råholt shortly after the accident at 2pm on Tuesday.

The victim’s daughter, Stella Mwangi, 25, represented Norway at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2011.

She also recently appeared on television with her father in the Norwegian version of Let’s Dance, in which she was a participant.

“She’s not doing well at all. Stella was very close to her father. She is mainly mourning her loss, not hunting for the driver,” her future father-in-law, Per Rogstad, told newspaper Romerikes Blad.

A 39-year-old man has been indicted for manslaughter in connection with the hit-and-run death of Stella Mwangi’s father in eastern Norway’s Akershus county, police say.

Jeff Mwangi Kwirikia, 54, died instantly after being run down by what is believed to be a dark-coloured van on a road in Dal in Ullensaker municipality, Tuesday.

Police report they have reasonable ground to suspect the man, who turned himself in, was the driver though this has not yet been confirmed. Officers are at the scene examining the van and surroundings after he showed them where it is parked.

25-year-old Nairobi-born Stella Mwangi, who represented Norway in 2011’s Eurovision Song Contest semi-finals with the song ‘Haba Haba’, is said to be going through a terrible time.

EMI, with whom the artist has a contract, said in a press statement, “It is with great sadness that we announce that the father of Stella Mwangi, Jeff Mwangi Kwirikia, died after a collision yesterday afternoon. He has been one of Stella’s most important supporters throughout life and not least in the past year.”

Company representatives have asked the press to respect Stella and her family, so that she can deal with this painful moment in her life.

Mayor of Ullensaker Harald Espelund, expressed his sorrow regarding Mr. Mwangi’s death.

“His death has affected our lives since we found out yesterday. The deceased was a municipal employee in one of our schools. It is always sad when someone loses his life, especially in traffic accidents when things happen incredibly quickly”, he told NRK.

Police are still interested in any information members of the public may have.

  7. RIP Mwangi >But a big Question must be asked Why was Mwangi Walking on the Highway? IF one looks where the accident occured there is no Foot -Path !What you see is a highway covered by Sno (ice)

In that Landscape you also see trees on the side of the road and a big field.
    The following Querries arises.
    (a) Was Mwangi killed and his body dumped on the road?
(2)How comes Mwangi was walking along the road in that deadly -cold winter season on the Highway?
These are some question every body must ask!
    Once again RIP Jeff Mwangi!
