Leaders say Uhuru and Muthaura are innocent

Cabinet ministers and MPs from Central Kenya on Wednesday defended Finance minister Uhuru Kenyatta, and head of civil service Francis Muthaura over their links to post-election violence.
Addressing the press at the Norfolk Hotel shortly after ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo released the names of six suspects, the leaders said the list was politically motivated.
Energy minister Kiraitu Murungi said he received the news with disbelief.
“To drag Mr Francis Muthaura’s name into the list, for example, only proves that the orchestrated move to have him out of office has finally come to pass,” said Mr Murungi.
He said although the legal process would finally prove them innocent, Mr Moreno-Ocampo’s announcement risked the political and professional careers of the two.
Environment minister John Michuki termed the list as mere propaganda. “I advise Kenyans that these six suspects are still innocent until proven guilty,” he said.
The leaders accused the media of “being used to finish” the suspects’ political careers.
Worst fears
Public Health minister Beth Mugo said the announcement confirmed their “worst fears” of political interference into the ICC investigations.
Special programmes minister Esther Murugi said there is no fairness or justice in the list of six suspects.
Trade Minister Amos Kimunya said leaders from Mt Kenya were fully behind Mr Kenyatta and declared that Mr Moreno-Ocampo will not frustrate his political career.
