Mr. Daniel Mwaura, a Kenyan resident in Stockholm, is standing in the Council elections at Botkyrka Kommun in Stockholm. Mr. Mwaura, who has been in active Swedish politics for more than 15 years, is standing on a Social Democratic Party ticket and is among seventy two candidates on the Social Democratic Party ballot paper for the Council election. At number 34, Mr. Mwaura’s chances of getting a seat in the Council is based on the number of voters who “X” his name on the ballot paper.
Speaking to KSB, Mr. Mwaura said that 60% of Botkyrka residents are immigrants but that the Council is dominated by non immigrants. “It is time that immigrants got a better representation to reflect the reality that immigrants are the majority in Botkyra”, Mr. Mwaura told KSB. The Kenyan politician said that he is the only African on the ballot paper among 72 candidates running on a Social Democratic Party ticket and urged all immigrants to vote for him.
According to the Swedish electoral system, seats in the Council are distributed according to the percentage of votes a Party receives. The larger the number of votes, the more seats a Party gets. After the vote, the decision as to who gets a seat among those on the ballot paper could either be automatic or based on voter preferences. It is important for Mr. Mwaura’s voters to understand this process so that they can “X” his name on the ballot paper and increase his chances of being elected.
If votes for the Social Democrats in Botkyrka can win the Party say 30 seats, then the first 30 candidates in the ballot paper will automatically be elected in the Council. Since Mwaura’s name is number 34, he will not be able to get in. The prognosis is that SDP might get 28 seats based on the expected number of votes and for Mr. Mwaura to be elected, he needs between 500-1000 direct votes on his name. This will enable him to “jump the line” by at least 6 candidates down the List to enable him get into the Council and champion immigrant and African interests.
“I have been campaigning all over Botkyrka and I am happy with the response. My posters are everywhere, from Alby to Tumba, Norsborg to Tullinge”, Mr. Mwaura told KSB. He added that so far, he has had a lot of support from members of the Kenyan community whom, he said, voted for him this week. “Many more have said that they will convince their friends to vote for me”, a jovial Mwaura said.
Under normal circumstances, the Party decides the order of candidates in the List but due to high democratic standards in Sweden, voters can also have their say by pin-pointing a candidate they want in the Council. The logic is to allow the voters to override Party leadership in case voters believe that a candidate who is more popular has been slotted down the List instead of being given prominence on top.

Dear Africans, am happy to see that a great son of Africa Kenya has stood up for our rights in Sweden and in Botkyrka. One mistake most of us- African continue to make is to leave on perepheries of countries we migrate to. How many of us are going to vote in the coming elections sincerely? We are to sit in the middle of the community if we shall enjoy equal rights, justice and mutual respect. We are to participate in all political, social and economic activities like any other citizens. The NGO world (föreningsliv), the political parties, economic cooperatives and unions have a huge bearing in what we want to achieve here and back home in Africa. Do not neglect any aspect and do not neglect your right to vote.
I for one has not chosen any political party to belong too yet because i will rather vote any African trying to represent us and our intrest in what ever political party he finds space to do so than any of these political parties whose difference am yet to know by the way.
I know ndugu Mwaura persaonally and he approached me for support. Am bussy requesting my friends and all i can influence to give him the vote.
Let me request all of you bloggers to do the same. Vote Ndugu Mwaura or request all your friends who can to vote him in.

“It’s better for us to have an African in a white man’s skin than a white man in a black man’s skin”
