According to latest reports from the Sports Association of Afro-Scandinavians (SAAS), the Kenya-Stockholm Football Team will not meet the Tanzanian team as had been thought because the Kenyans are the champs in group B while the Tanzanians are leading in group A of the Africa 2010 Challenge Cup. According to rules governing football internationally, two leading teams from different groups cannot clash at the Semi-finals and this is why the Kenyans cannot meet the Tanzanians.
After losing to the Somalis last Saturday at Rinkebt Knutby BP, there was no change in the points margin for the Kenyans. The Somalis gained three points to be at equal standing with the Kenyans who had also gained 6 points after winning two games in the tournament. If the Kenyans had beaten the Somalis, they could have increased their lead to 9 points. The reason why the Kenyans will not meet the Tanzanians is because although they have 6 points (as the Somalis), they are leading in goals and this means that they are number one in group B. The Kenyans have a goal aggregate of 7 while the Somalis have 6.
This latest development comes as a big relief because the Tanzanians are said to be good and could give the Kenyans a very hard time at the Semis. Instead, the Kenyans will now meet the Guinean team which is number two in group A. With good practice and increased vigour, the Kenyans should be able to easily thwack the Guineans (whose defence is weak and whose strikers lack proper co-ordination) to qualify for the finals. It is expected that the Tanzanians will reach the finals because they are likely to beat the Somalis in the semis.
The Tanzanians are not taking any chances and they are training hard to lift the trophy. If the Kenyans manage to reach the finals to clash with the Tanzanians, the situation might change because the Kenyans tend to perform better in a “do or die” situation. They might pull a big surprise on the Tanzanians by dispatching them to Dar-es-salam empty handed after the finals. Currently, the team is searching for Gideon Asum, a professional Kenyan footballer based in Bålsta, Stockholm, whose presence in the team could seal the fate of the Tanzanians should they clash at the finals. With the legacy of Mau Mau behind them, it will be difficult for the Tanzanians to scare the Kenyans who also have a tendency of performing well especially when brought under pressure.
Kenyans in Stockholm need to give their team moral support by turning up in large numbers with Vuvuzelas, Sikuti, Ohangla, song and dance to boost the morale of the team. Some Kenyans in Finland are coordinating with their countrymen in Denmark to travel to Stockholm to support the team in case they reach the finals although the plans are said to be at their early stages. The Kenya-Guinea match will take place at Rinkeby Knutby BP on Saturday July 17th at 17.00 hrs. The Tanzanians will meet the Somalis at the same venue, same date at 18.00 hrs. The finals will be held on Saturday July 31st at Melahöjdens IP at 18.00 hrs.
Speaking to KSB, Makan Macharia, the teams Captain, said that the boys understand the challenge ahead of them and that they are preparing hard. He appealed for support from members of the Kenya-Stockholm community and added that any Kenyan who can play football should get in touch with him or KSB to join the team. “Kenyans should view this team as theirs and everybody is welcome to participate”, he told KSB.
