Challenges and opportunities for a future without aids in Africa
The presentation starts by noting some paradoxes observed in studies among young people in some African contexts. The main questions are: how can we explain that in spite of more than nearly half a century of research and other forms of interventions, the pandemic escalates? Young people in many countries in Africa ask some very basic questions about transmission? People die from AIDS when there are effective medicines, not just because the prices are prohibitive especially in view of the required regular monitoring of the various clinical indices, but because stigma makes people shy away from seeking voluntary counseling and testing and at times treatment. The presentation addresses the complexities and examines AIDS in the context of the international development ideology that maintains inequalities and poverty in the global south.
