Agnes, a Kenyan resident in Stockholm, invites friends, supporters and well-wishers to a funds drive to enable her purchase a ticket for her daughter who is stuck in Kenya. The daughter is undergoing great difficulty in Kenya especially after the death of Agnes’ son who used to care for her.
Agnes has managed to make arrangements so that the daughter can travel to Sweden but the problem now is that she has no ticket.
The funds drive will take place on Saturday August 29th 2009 at Byälvsvägen 24 in Bagarmossen from 14.00 hrs. The daughter is currently sick and needs urgent medical attention which is not available in Kenya following collapse of health care in Kenya. Please excuse me for sounding cynical, which some might say I am, but every problem has a solution but it is not necessarily that the solution is easy. I believe that Kenyans in Stockholm have bigger problems to contend with. There are cases that warrant a response of the kind Agnes requests for but, in my opinion the circumstances presented constitute a clear case of misguided notions and definitely my fellow Kenyan has gone overboard. Besides a ticket from Kenya to Stockholm this month would cost her max SEK 6,000. I would advice Agnes to visit the following sites indicated below that offer loans at relatively lower interest rates

Ms Thang couldn’t be more right. There are circumstances or situations that require fundraising, but no matter how difficult things are for Agnes at the moment, she could fend for herself in this. There are so many travel agencies in Stockholm with credit facilities which allow the customer to pay later for the purchased flight ticket.
Common Agnes, you could do this privately with very close friends to help you raise the cash or take credit and buy your daughter a ticket to Sweden. Moreover, many Kenyans have now budgeted for the New African Concert on 29th August, so you won’t get many people attending the fundraising.

I fail to understand what is wrong with certain individuals in kenyastockholm. You mean even a ticket worth 6000sek Kenyans should be called for a harambee? This is total exploitation ma friends. I have managed to bring my two children in sweden(and mind you I was single by then) and I didn’t even bother my friends. I understand this agness has been here for nearly ten years, is this not a shame?? sometimes ata nyinyi acheni. why do we critise our politicians back home for exploiting the nation and not one of our own here in the diaspora???
I echo the above stated comments,but please stop and evaluate Agnes`s request,”it was honest” i say honest because she actually stated why and what the funds are for,i know of several kenyans who have brought their children,relatives,aka husbands and aka wives with money from wakenya purporting other reasons,please give credit where its due,being here for ten years does not automaticaly earn you credit facilities from banks,ask”man mkubwa,lady J,Mount kenya Mafia,kisumu city,mdawida…the list is long”(they are stone age here,they tried the credit way but got disapointed,because their more that fifteen years in sweden could not earn them bank loans),the lesson here is ,we should be more HONEST as Agnes,am appealling to KSB to drive the point of honesty home,i personally do not know this woman but i read her plight between the lines,KSB KAZI KWENU,hao sio!?

Private eye seems to missunderstand ma point. am not negative to the ideas of harambees, but i hate when i see people using the others. you say some people have brought their relative purporting other reasons, well its these kind of people who are destroying the spirit of harambee and they should be exposed.
I know not everyone can be awarded a bank loan, but one can work and save 6000sek. If the harambee situation in kenyastockholm continue the way it is, kenyans will remain poor simply because the accept to be exploited
Private eye: I fully appreciuate your sentiments but the first four commentators have explained what they feel warrant harambees. I don’t know anything more about Agnes but generally, bringing kids here is a personal effort that does not require a harambee. We should therefore not misuse the spirit of teamwork and should only call the Kenyan public to help in more serious matters.
At one time Agnes must have planned to bring her daughter to Sweden, meaning she should have been saving money to purchase the ticket she now badly requires. A lady recently brought her children from Kenya and I don’t recall any fundraising held for this.
Harambees are voluntary and one is bound to say what he/she feels concerning them. A commentator has requested her to call her friends to assist privately. The Swedish welfare might also assist if the situation is that grim.
Kenyans, let us focus on the bigger picture!
