  1. Congratulations Wambui Mwangi on your thoughtful, holistic and excellent critique of the Kenyan-ness in us. President-elect Barack Obama’s political prominence has stirred claims of “ownership” within some Kenyans, thereby stoking mental fires that have generated varied reactions. For them, Obama’s win is a psychological compensation for their loss in Kenya’s last presidential election. You conclude so well that many of us cannot achieve Obama’s dreams because of the hopelessness we face. “But oh, how we yearn to see ourselves reflected in his eyes…”

You have unearthed some key societal ills that have chocked Kenyans since Independence in 1963 to this moment. I agree with you that we hardly acknowledge our people at home, yet when they move abroad and achieve highly in different careers or positions, we disingenuously claim some ownership of them. Kenya’s renowned Professor Ngugi wa Thiong’o was never honored by the government of his time, which banned his works and forced him into exile. He is now a well-respected academic in the United States. We recall so well the shameful assault he and his wife underwent a few years ago when they visited Kenya after so many years; a Kenyan-style “welcome back.”

The late Obama Senior (a beneficiary of American education) is another unsung hero. Many Kenyans could not have known about him were it not for his American son, Obama Junior. When he returned to Kenya as an economist in the 1960s, he was eager to translate his knowledge into reality. However, he faced great challenges when he questioned corrupt government transactions and was hounded out of office. His scientific reports and articles on Kenya’s economy are still gathering dust without implementation. Many years later in 2006, his son Barack Obama visited Kenya as a US Senator. He then addressed a charged crowd of students at the Nairobi University and pointed out what ails Kenya: corruption and bad governance. His speech was greeted with anger by the Kenya government and he was even called a ‘Junior Senator’ who did not understand local politics. The same leadership that demonized him then, did not hesitate to congratulate his recent presidential win, and even declared a holiday for Kenyans to celebrate him as “one of their own”.

Last night I watched a television documentary discussing the global proliferation of small arms especially in Africa. It was sad to see the son of late Professor Job Bwayo talking about the senseless killing of his dad on the outskirts of Nairobi in February 2007. He was one of Africa’s top researchers leading a team in developing an HIV vaccine, but was shot dead by a young carjacker without provocation. This is how we continue to reward many of our heroes and heroines. The social rot in Kenya is now so deeply entrenched that the majority have lost hope.

How many Obamas do Kenyans need so as to receive government services? I read in today’s Standard newspaper that the ancestral home of Obama in Kogelo was recently electrified within two days, courtesy of “orders from above.” What about those homes without an Obama? Will they ever be electrified or have graders paving their dirt roads? His step-grandmother now has full-time government paid security and a police post will be built very soon in her neighborhood. Will such ‘government blessings’ trickle down to the homes of other unsung Kenyans?

It is unknown when Kenyans will get their own (local) Barack Obama. Until then, the US Obama will continue exuding hope and happiness amidst their despondency.

  2. Am not really into politics…& for the most as per my experience with real-life(Hardcore survival),Its never benefitted my life directly(lies & broken promises). Its kinda kiddish & stupid for grownups to waste time debatting on irrelevant issues such as who is the so called Obama relatives & who’s not.Who gives a fuck? Prove it by Telling Obama to give you a job at the white house in the name of kin!If not, Shut the fuck up & stop shinning in the shadows of a star… Remember a baboon laughs at fellow baboons asses when they tend to pass ahead of them, forgetting that it has the same or even worser & ugly ass….No offence!!!!Grow up!!!!
