A Kenyan woman who has been recovering at a Swedish hospital and who was being threatened with deportation by a Swedish couple has gone missing from hospital. According to Mr. Tonny Odera who has been handling the case, the woman disappeared on Thursday last week.
Tonny told KSB that he suspects that the couple who have been behind the woman’s intimidation might be the people behind her mysterious disappearance. Hospital personnel at Huddinge where the woman was recuperating have refused to comment on the woman’s whereabouts.
At the time she disappeared, Mr. Daniel Kotutt, a senior official at the Kenyan Embassy, had began following up the woman’s case to establish how the Embassy could help. Mr. Kotutt said that the Embassy was planning to take up the matter with the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs where the woman’s employer is said to be working. The couple moved from Kenya about a year ago together with the woman after their tour of duty ended. The woman was working for the couple as a maid in Kenya. Mr. Kotut took contact with Tonny for a briefing although the matter never moved very far after news spread that the woman had disappeared from hospital.
Before her disappearance, the woman’s case had been taken up by “HIV Sweden”, an umbrella organization bringing together several HIV organization’s in Sweden. The woman was HIV positive and it is for this reason that HIV organizations have been in the front line in trying to establish the nature of her situation and how they could help. She was diagnosed with HIV after she was admitted at Huddinge Hospital following problems with her lungs.
When Tonny took contact with the woman through “Hetero-Plus”, an organization which looks into the interests of HIV positive people in Sweden, the woman claimed that the Swedish couple who had brought her to Sweden had detained her Passport in preparation for her deportation in case her health improved. In Sweden, she has been working for the couple as an Au Pair.
“There is absolutely no contact with her”, Tonny told KSB. Tonny could not speculate whether the woman might have been deported at short notice. At the time she got seriously ill, her property had reportedly been packed by her employer in preparation for her deportation to Kenya.
A Kenyan lady who met the woman in hospital before she went missing told KSB that she looked worried and that “she talked like someone who had been brainwashed”.
