Beryl Otumba, the Interim Secretary of the recently launched “Movement for the Restoration of Democracy in Kenya (MOREDEK)” has, this morning, appeared on Swedish National TV 1 Channel to clarify the situation in Kenya where the opposition has been banned from organizing public rallies in total violation of Freedom of Association enshrined in the Kenyan Constitution.
Beryl told viewers that the restoration of democracy and respect of human rights in Kenya are key issues that form part of the solution to the crisis. She said that the main problem is the rigging of elections by Kibaki, pointing out that ODM is not in a position to control what millions of Kenyans could do in the process of protesting in the streets. She welcomed the fact that EU is in the process of making an intervention in the situation.
MOREDK’s Executive committee is meeting today in Stockholm to evaluate the situation following ODM rallies yesterday and today. The position of the Movement is that elections were rigged in Kenya and part of MOREDEK’s agenda is to put pressure on both the Swedish government and the International community to take action against the Kibaki dictatorship now killing innocent civilians using security forces. More than 70 Kenyans have so far been shot dead in the city of Kisumu while the death toll across the country as a result of the rigging has now risen to around 700.
