The Kenya Red Alliance (KRA) sends deep condolences to the family of the late Dr. Wangari Maathai following her passing away at Nairobi Hospital in Kenya. Throughout her struggles, Maathai has been a symbol of hope, resistance and renewal to the people of Kenya. She shines out as having been an outstanding voice of the voiceless while her enormous work in the conservation of the environment locally and internationally will remain impinged on the minds of many generations to come.
Maathai was a real freedom fighter, liberator and resister of oppression, dictatorship and marginalization of the poor. Kenyans will remember her for struggles in the front lines during the Moi dictatorship. Through her Green Belt Movement, she succeeded in sensitizing millions of people around the world on the need for environmental conservation, a great work that culminated in her winning the coveted Nobel Peace Prize. Kenyans and the world will miss Maathai.
In her memory, Maathai deserves a monument or a street named after her in our country Kenya because she is a real heroine who did our country proud during her life time. She was a good example and source of inspiration to many women, both in Kenya and the world. KRA’s leadership hopes that her family will have the courage to go through the tragic loss. Death has once again taken away a strong voice from Kenya’s political struggle. She will greatly be missed by millions of Kenyans and those who admired her courage around the world.

I send deep condolences to the family and all Kenyans

Wangari Mathai a shining star in Kenya .You will be remembered for ever.
My deepest condolences to Professor Maathai’s family for the very big loss. She stood for humanity in all aspects and was fearless in articulating her viewpoint, especially during the leadership of former President Moi.
I vividly recall Prof Maathai’s speech in May 2005 at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm, titled: “Ecosystems, Livelihoods, Democracy and Peace” and understood why she had been awarded the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize. She did so much to alleviate poverty among rural women in Kenya and I hope the Green Belt Movement will carry on her legacy. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
