The number of refugees flocking into Uganda after escaping the turmoil in the wake of Kenya’s Presidential elections has hit 800, Tororo MP Geoffrey Ekanya has said.
Addressing a press conference at Parliament yesterday (Monday), Ekanya said that if government does respond by sending relief to the area, the situation may run out of control.
He said that women and children are sleeping on the streets of Mbale, Tororo Busia and Malaba without food and water for three days now, posing a likelihood of hunger and disease breakout.
“For the first time in history, the trends in Kenya are affecting Uganda very adversely. Our fears are that the Kenyans crossing enmasse into the country without being recorded,” he said.
He said it is after he contacted internal affairs minister Ruhakana Rugunda that immigration officials started registering the refugees.
