Tinga Tinga Jazz Band from the slums of Kibera in Nairobi is currently playing in Stockholm. The group has already played at Pub Katalin in Uppsala and at Torg Book Exhibition in Göteborg. On Thursday Sept 28th, the group will be playing at Södra Teaterns Lilla scen in Stockholm from 21 hrs.
In Kenya, Tinga Tinga Jazz Band works with a local organization called Umande Trust. Josiah Omotto who hails from Umande in Kbera is accompanying the group. The Tinga Tinga trip is part of an on-going project called “Urban Policy” financed by the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA). A book entitled “More Urban Less Poor” has been published through SIDA as part of the Project.
“The book – More Urban Less Poor – fills a vacuum because there is almost no literature which describes the situation in the towns in third world countries”, says Thomas Melin who works at the Department of Urban Development at SIDA.
