The head popping up the table belongs to the artist Makode Linde, who is half black and half Swedish. He has blackened himself to match the pitch black cake colour. If this was meant to portray empathy to the victims of female genital mutilation, then the Culture Minister’s laughing face together with those of her spectators, would have have been sad. It is a racial mockery of a very torturous act that scars many girls and women for life.
I am not going to say whether the “artist” is a racist or not, but I will say that the cake was without a doubt racially insensitive. I don’t know how things work in Europe, and more specifically Sweden, but in the U.S., black face is considered highly offensive by Black Americans, and before you tell us to stop being so sensitive, make sure you say the same thing to Jews or Asians who would be outraged by an offensive caricature of their people. I can respect the intent to shed light on female circumcision, but my questions to the “artist” would be, “Why make the cake jet black instead of a deep, rich brown? Why the ridiculously, wide mouth with red lips and spaced out teeth? Why a depiction that resembles a racially offensive Looney Toons cartoon (look it up)? Why do the observers appear more entertained and amused by the work than horrified by it?” IMO, this was a sick attempt to be controversial, but this goes far beyond being controversial, it’s offensive and a mockery of the cause that it was suppose to bring to light, SMH.
This was sad to watch, I think the artist was trying to bring to attention the issue of female circumcision, but not sure he/she succeeded, the participants all seem to think the exhibit was quite funny, sad really, very, very sad. Appears just a general lack of awareness and understanding of the culture, traditions (good or bad) and circumstances on the African Continent and those of us in the Diaspora.
This is so idiotic. Why do people LOVE to be offended so much? It may have been a bit of a silly cake but why is everyone crucifying her for “racism”?! You can’t become a victim unless you victimise yourself, so some people ought to bloody stand up for themselves. “Racism” indeed. The cake was black – OH DEAR! Black women get circumcised – OH DEAR, it’s racist to highlight that so she must obviously get sacked!
The new racism is ‘denying racism’. Point blank. Im sick and tired of racists who are all high and mighty thinking they are the victims politically, economically and socially. Grow up. Get a clue. Or a soul. Perhaps for some, you just need to ‘die off’ so a new generation can authentically make the change you so arrogantly think has already occurred. Its a a real abomination and a great shame but it unfortunately true. Humanity just isnt ‘trending’.
You would think someone in her position would have foreseen the consequencies of her actions. It,s not enough to talk about symbolism. She could have simply taken a coffee , sat down and watched the spectacle….but no she participated in the event showing an extreme lack of judgement which I believe we are entitled to expect from someone in her position
Funny, I don’t see any black people in the audience… Oh, wait, this is Sweden! Good thing, huh, nobody to get offended by this demeaning stereotype! Whew! Close one, huh?
This was just a cake; nothing racist about cutting it. Women and girls undergo thie painful and disgusting mutilation yet many people don’t make such a fuss.

U se the victim here in this rather very sad and absurd behavior is the African woman any in Diaspora, the cake where the minister of culture cat portrait the private parts of an African woman, that what they se Africa women. Makonde if that was his name if he had done the same thing but this time instead of an African woman but a white Jewish woman laying naked with an harks on her private pats would the minister go to that function, or would any gallery allowed the artist to show his work? No the whole world would hove boycott his work and cold it ANTY SEMITIK ,, I DID SOW THE DEBART PROGRAM YESTERDAY ON THE PARNEL OF THOSE WHO STODE UP FOR AFRICANS WAS A YOUNG SOMALIAN GUY WHO DIID DEFENDED Africans not a single African woman, neither did Nywako Sabuni was there. Very sad, I think all the embassy Africans diplomat must go out with an open later demanding an apology from the Swedish government and the artist. For as here in Diaspora STUND UPP TALL.
