Just as he had promised, Dr. Andy did arrive at Hotel Inter-Continental to meet his new business associate, Debbie who was equally excited about the new development. Dr. Andy had understood that during the initial stages of the “wooing process”, it was important to play big and give the impression of wealth and a stress free life. An appointment at Hotel Intercontinental was designed to help with “image building” and “impact creation”. It worked well because when Debbie surfaced just five minutes after the 3 pm appointment, she did recognize Dr Andy’s “Executive approach” to business.
“Welcome to my world”, the doctor replied willingly as he rose on his feet to usher Debbie on to a comfortable sofa strategically placed at a corner of the open space where their meeting was scheduled to take place. Debbie was immaculately dressed in a silver blue business suite with jacket and skirt fitting her tightly thereby exposing her well-kept figure that could send the head of a Stockholm bachalero into an immediate spin.
As she settled down for “bizz talk”, it was evident that she had mastered the art of physical posturing before a male creature. She crisscrossed her legs during the opening stages of the meeting as she relaxed her back on the comfortable sofa to give Dr. Andy an opportunity to “open the talks”.
The skirt was just short enough to respectfully expose a good chunk of her thighs while the arrangement on her chest area allowed Dr. Andy to sample the diamond necklace tipped with a heart-love symbol that rested on the cleft separating her partially exposed boobs.
With a stylish hair-do, well polished make-up and silver-coated ear-rings that dangled with every movement of her head, there was no debate about the cleaver combination of feminist consciousness, fashion, business talk and, somehow, an invitation to romance with the unknown.
The meeting was brief and the discussions were short. Dr. Andy’s experience had taught him to exploit the business session to understand his prey before laying a better strategy that could led to an undisturbed consumption of the sumptuous goods.
As a tactic, Dr. Andy had discovered that a short talk about his personal life with women enhanced romantic expectations especially if they were single so he always ensures that in his personal intro, he mentions that he is divorced from a white Swedish woman with whom he had two kids before proceeding to the main agenda. The logic is simple: Which single woman in Kenya wouldn’t like trying her luck with a wealthy Doctor resident in Holland, given the prospect of the “good life” everybody is looking for on the planet?
When it came to business, Dr. Andy expanded on several key matters – his Clinic business idea, an office space he had located in town, the government paper-work, purchase of equipment, recruitment of support medical personnel/office staff and re-design of the clinic building. Finally, he came to the area which Debbie was most interested in – the insurance cover.
“The business idea is big and I intend to expand it across the country by reproducing the Nairobi model in other key towns and cities”, Dr. Andy said. My fundamental problem is identifying areas of weaknesses which need insurance cover so that I am not surprised with a sudden draw-back that might cost me a fortune”, he added as he posed to indirectly alert Debbie that it was her turn to talk. Debbie did not waste time.
She quickly identified three obvious areas where Dr. Andy needed cover. An accident at the Clinic that could lead to injury or death of a patient, a sudden break down of a major equipment at the clinic that could bring work to a standstill and insurance cover for workers at the clinic.
As she went into detailed description of the various risk factors, it was Dr. Andy’s turn to sit back and listen so he clasped his hands and gave Debbie all the attention, occasionally rising to sip his orange drink that rested on the coffee table. By the end of the meeting, Dr. Andy could not hold back his appreciation for Debbie’s brilliance and strong sense of professionalism.
A Toss “For the Future”
During the explanations, the Doctor occasionally faked expressions of surprise when Debbie hit a major point of risk which could cost him millions. He could, for example, exclaim “really!”, “Oh my God”, “I had not thought about that”, “thanks God I came into contact with you” and so on.
Believing that Dr. Andy was genuine after he gave her a fantastic history of performing surgery in Europe for over 15 years and the need for him to use his skills to save lives in Kenya after the collapse of the health care system, Debbie exploited the points of surprise to back up the risks with vivid examples of medical practitioners she knew who had suffered losses in millions of Kenyan shillings due to lack of professional advice or limited financial resources. When Dr Andy noticed that Debbie had began to swallow the bait, he decided that it was time for him to alert her that she had “been hired”.
“I am impressed and from now henceforth, take it that you will be in charge of all my insurance needs here in Kenya”, he said. You could have seen the wide smile on Debbie’s face as she said “Oh thank you”. The Dr. rose and gestured for a hand shake to seal the deal and Debbie did respond just on time.
“Are we partners from today onwards?”, Dr Andy ventured with a smile expecting nothing but a positive answer.
“Yes Doctor”, she answered, looking at him straight in the eyes with a smile in place. The Doctor then proposed a toss “For the future” as the two settled down once again to get to the next level. They had been meeting for well over an hour now and Debbie had become much more relaxed. Dr. Andy then went into the logistics. He wanted to know the details of a possible cover, how much it would cost and the type of agreements they needed to enter into.
“At this point, I can only go into slight detail because I need more time to work out all details then we can fix a new meeting to discuss them”, she said.
“Oh! Sure. That sounds professional”, he said. He asked how long it would take to do the work and Debbie said three days. The Doctor reminded her that he was poised to leave the country in about a week but that he had delayed his trip because there were other business matters he needed to sort out. He advised Debbie to give him a call as soon as she was ready so that they could wind up the deal, sign an agreement and move on from there. This was acceptable to Debbie who nodded with appreciation.
The Doctor then asked Debbie whether she needed transport back and Debbie said she could call her driver to pick her up because he was in the vicinity. She didn’t want to look cheap especially with minor stuff like transport.
“OK. That’s fine. I will make some calls from here, take a cab to meet a friend at Weslands then retire for the day”, he said.
“Thanks for the meeting and I hope to see you again”, she said.
“I must also thank you for accepting to work with me. I now feel more confident because I am coming towards the end of the road with planning. It’s been a long journey for me”, he said.
“Have a nice evening”, she replied.
“Same to you and say hi to everybody”, Dr Andy gave a parting shot as he watched Debbie leave the scene in short steps, her hips swinging with uniform motion, the slit below her skirt exposing “eye candy” with every step as she carried her flesh away from the meeting venue.
Dr. Andy knew that he had to plan well for the next meeting. Debbie’s physical attraction convinced him that he had to do everything possible to get to the real destination. The story continues next Tuesday…
