Almost 1 Million Shillings Raised for Sumba Funeral
Almost one million Kenya Shillings was raised for the late Mr. Onyango Sumba’s funeral. The function, which was held at the Nairobi Railway Club on 27th October 2009, attracted a huge crowd comprising friends, relatives, politicians, prominent people and well-wishers. Cabinet Ministers, Anyang’ Nyong’o and James Orengo, were the chief guests.
Previously, mourners had met daily at the Professional Centre, but a bigger venue was arranged for this main fundraising. A lot of love and brotherhood was shown by all the speakers who praised the late Sumba for his patriotism and great contribution towards Kenya’s quest for democracy.
Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who was Mr. Sumba’s confidant and comrade in struggle, donated 50 thousand shillings. This writer, who is representing Kenya-Stockholm at the funeral, gave a personal contribution of 10 thousand shillings.
A mass for the deceased will be held on October 29th 2009, at the Holy Family Basilica in Nairobi and the burial will take place at his home in Alego on Saturday, October 31st. A Daily Nation death announcement can be found HERE.

Apostle Karanja Arrives Today in Stockholm
Apostle David Karanja of the Christ Harvesters Ministry International (Atlanta, Georgia) arrives in Stockholm today, Wednesday, for a three day Conference organized by Kenya Christians in Stockholm.
Speaking to KSB, Mr. Githuku wa Muirani, the Coordinator of the Conference, invited all interested Kenyans and friends at the Conference which will be held from Friday 30th October to Sunday 1st November.
The theme of the Conference is “Divine Healing”. Mr. Muirani will host a Dinner for the Pastor at his residence in Norsborg soon after his arrival from the United States. The Conference will take place at Lågkärrgatan 13 at Kärrtorp (Skapnäck line). Further info can be obtained here.

Ksh 61,000 Raised at Onyango Sumba’s Memorial
On Saturday October 25th, Kenyans, friends and well wishers attended a Memorial service in Stockholm for the late Mr. Onyango Sumba. The function was held at the Christ Disciples Fellowship Center and was presided over by Pastor Kyien Anijan assisted by Pastor Nicholas Odada.
Pastor Kyien delivered the welcome address and prayed for the late Mr. Sumba. Pastor Nicholas then read the scripture from the book of 1 Corrintheans 15:50-58 before the congregation sang “Change my heart of God”.
This was followed by speeches from Mrs Hellen Opwapo who spoke on behalf of the Sumba family, Mr. Martin Ngatia who spoke about Sumba’s political life and Mr. Jack Mulo who gave a brief background of Mr. Sumba. Dr. Otieno Wariaro spoke as a close friend of Mr. Sumba. A fund raising was then held to help offset funeral expenses in Kenya before Pastor Kyien gave the concluding remarks.
Those present included Dr. Margaret Obondo, Mrs Grace Ngatia, Mr. Joseph Munene, Jasper Orieny, Brother Paul, Mrs Opwapo’s daughters – Maureen and Yollanda, Mzee Ouya from Uganda, Mr. Dan Aroka, Ms Jaqueline, Eunice, Dr. Otieno Wariaro and wife among others.
A total of 61.000 Ksh was raised towards Sumba’s funeral kitty and the money was handed over to Mrs Hellen Opwapo who was tasked with handing over the money to Mr. Sumba’s family in Sweden. Family members will leave for the funeral on Thursday to be in Kenya for burial on Saturday 31st October. A video report of the Memorial is being processed by KSB.
