New Kenya Film to Feature at CinemaAfrica
VICTIM OF OUR RICHES

The opening film is the Victims of Our Riches. It deals with some of the hundreds of thousands of people each year trying to get from Africa via Morocco, Libya and Turkey to Spain, Italy or Greece. Some succeed, but many are forced to return in degrading conditions and many die. For all of them, travel is extremely demanding, the road is lined with beatings, torture, rape and intimidation.
Kal Touré is visiting the festival.

FROM A WHISPER

We also show the young film director Wanuri Kahius feature film debut, From a Whisper. The film, which has been triumphal at festivals, is based on the 1998 bombing of U.S. Embassy in Nairobi. Tamani has devoted much of his life to looking for her mother, who disappeared on that day ten years ago. From a Whisper is a powerful and emotional tale of yearning and grief to accept, forgive and understand.
Wanuri Kahiu will be at the festival.

MASQUERADE

Miss Nor, the Algerian wedding farce Masquerades of Mounir is living with his family in a dusty little town in Algeria, where he hasn’t’ had much success but struggles to get respect. His sister, Munir, who is a die-hard narcoleptic and a laughing stock, clearly reduces his chances of marrying until an immensely rich Australian appears in the picture …

MOTHER (MORE-BI)

Senegal, 2008, 55 min, Wolof & French, English subtitles
The Senegalese documentary, Mother, is a gentle and proud portrait of the outspoken, wise and deeply committed 82-year old Annette Mbaye d’Erneville, Senegal’s first trained journalist, who is also a poet and a famous profile in public debate throughout the decades. Her story is also a story about the recent history of Senegal and Africa’s freedom movement.
