Nonini Show And The “Conquring Babes Of Kenya-Stockholm”

bumper to bumper at nonini  in action

Last Sato was one of the busiest in Stockholm in recent times. Kesofo was having a Committee meeting so activity began at Kesofo Headquarters. Then, Mr. Laban Mberi was having a private function at his residence so I together with Man Opash and Munala wa Munala dashed to the Mberis after the kesofo meeting (dropping kesofo Treasurer, Silas Njuguna on the way) after which it was time to race to the residence of Janet to show solidarity with the ailing Naomi who was raising money for her eye operation.

The place was packed with Wakenya of good will and from a brief study of the situation, Mr. Daniel Mwaura, the Narc Kenya Chairperson, appeared to have been in control. Time was running out and we had to leave for the Nonini show in Vällingby and when we arrived, it was a beehive of activity.

Nonini was in town and any Kenyan who was not in the vicinity was either too broke, ailing, working or simply not interested in the affairs of Wakenya in Stockholm for this breed of Wananchi also exist.

You could quickly notice that whoever was there had prepared well for the occasion and this preparation was especially noticeable in the kind of expensive attire that were on display. The main competition was among the ladies and the young boys although there were cases where you could notice that a guy alijivaa chabla chabla with UFF kinda rugs.

To understand the sophistication, you needed to examine the shoes, the ear-rings, the wrist bands, the watches, the hand bags, the hair styles, the make-up and other tiny additions that underlined the element of class among revellers.

In cases where you were familiar enough with say a lady and managed to attract a jolly hug, you simply had to sharpen your sense of smell to sample the perfume during that “one second rest” of your hard cheek-bone on softer ground as you muttered the umelost and other related phrases before moving on to the next item. If you are new, perfumes are sprayed around the shoulders (among other areas) for the chins lucky enough to end up there at the Party.

I chose to make strategic compliments depending on what was prominent and the impact as seen in the smiling faces was just fantastic. It was a way of stimulating a “Thank you” from every compliment and they liked it by the way.

The disco system was top class – it was booming and once inside the hall, you had to keep your mouth shut unless you wanted to practice how to shout because a low-tone exchange was not possible.

Since Nonini was still chilling somewhere, you could walk around to update yourself about Wakenya and friends who patched their bodies lazily on furniture at the lobby where the loud music was not so pronounced. Just by scanning the scene with your eyes, you could notice which bull was endesharing which Princess and gather some intelligence about who had split with who on the basis of how they related but only if you had some historical background. Wakenya vijana who had just hooked jungu girls were jiskiaring mbaya sana and because of the big risk of the girl getting interested in another lad, they were “over protected”.

AFTER NONINI SETBACK, THE SITUATION BEGAN TO CHANGE
I could not identify several strangers although there are cases when I could manage to fix a Kenyan link connected to the stranger to update me. “And who is that”, I posed as the answers flowed back.

Rapper Kolo, who moved from Stockholm to London some times back, was on the DJs Desk, occasionally rotating with other DJs. The dance floor was already active although on a small time basis. We agreed with Kolo that we would get in touch before he goes back to London and I hope he will do so.

As usual, hot gossip was there in plenty and one could fill up a few gaps here and there. If you were keen enough, you could also notice the Networks that were current within Wakenya because groups of these Networks tended to stick together. The mood at the Party remained calm and collected while the situation at the dance floor was that of a “warm-up” kinda thing because everybody was waiting for Nonini.

However, the situation changed suddenly after Nonini did his 30 minute gig. Wakenya complained, they displayed anger, confronted the organizers who could be identified and cursed the fact that they had been fooled because the 30 minutes was too short for 200 kr. But, after all the whining and grinding of teeth, life had to go on. To kill their frustrations, the dance floor began to get active as the Kenyan youth and “Punguza Uzee” crew began to populate every inch of it.

The crowd was a mixture and one interesting aspect is that even leaders of top organizations and political parties downloaded their ranks at the door way to transform themselves into free men and women getting ready to enjoy the menu of the evening. The music was further saturated by rappers who took turns on the microphone to drive the crowd crazy.

If you were unaccompanied male or female, getting on the floor was an extremely big risk and unless you were ready to live with the consequences, you just had to dance with your buttocks glued on one of the seats that lined the walls of the hall. The place was packed with youthful, luscious and “tempting to touch” girls who looked single and a smart bachelor could not walk back to his crib without catching something to conclude the evening. It was one place where you get to understand that boobs come in different shapes and sizes because majority were left half bare “for your eyes only”.

THE STUDENT GIRL & THE TOP STOCKHOLM POLITICIAN
The situation was so serious that when two top politicians heading one of the Parties in Stockholm risked their chances on the floor, they quickly found their “front lobes” rubbing endlessly behind fleshy and delicately covered bums, much to the amusement of observers. It was impossible to tell whether they were just having fun or whether they were up to “something deeper”.

A closer analysis of the characteristic tight-grips combined with lengthy periods of intense “chest to chest” contacts suggested more advanced designs in the imagination. One of the victims had a coat and the cleaver lady simply made her hands to disappear inside the coat with no one being able to tell exactly what her fingers were doing under the coat and in a dimly lit dance floor. Once again, you just had to leave it to the imagination.

On the side ways and at darker corners of Trappan, the sight of lips to lips encounters in moments of elaborate smooches were not uncommon as men and women who could not wait any longer advertised what the future held just in case you were in doubt and thought that it was just another Nonini show. You had to wake up and smell the coffee.

The lassie that was physically manoeuvring with a politician some of the most dangerous moves ever witnessed on a Kenyan dance floor is said to be in gymnasium and the politician who was working on her delicate quarters through the popular but sophisticated back hook appeared to enjoy every bit of it.

If you are male, don’t try a back hook if your top attire is not long enough to cover your flyer because then, you might have to restrain some strong forces (pushing mysteriously) by dipping your hands into the pocket after the end of a back hook.

Together with another politician who was secretly squeezing fatty boobs at the “Red corner”, the two Wanasiasa hodari took the “Gold medal” when it came to the class of “The Most Imaginative & Provocative” styles on the floor. Although revellers appeared to enjoy the scene, the political consequences in terms of hot gossip and propaganda have just began to take root.

The hitch is that the two politicians are known to have acquired “permanent soul-mates” and what they never understood was that as they were busy having what, to KSB, appeared to have been an extremely good time, they were, at the same time, feeding different Kenya-Stockholm rumour mills (that were well represented) with fodder. There was Radio Norsborg, Radio Alby, TV Tensta and other channels that are currently busy twisting and transmitting different versions while at the same time rendering different interpretations of the dance floor fireworks. For details, send email.

CONQURING BABES OF THE TRIBE OF KENYA-STOCKHOLM
There is a growing class of youthful and trendy Kenyan girls who crossed over the 18 year bridge here in Sweden. They are courageous, daring, naughty and bad news. They are the luscious and highly cosmopolitan “Kenya-Stockholm Babes” likely to define party trends in the coming period.

When they catch up with a boy on the floor (they are very choosy), their agenda is “maximum harassment” especially from the waist and as the poor lad begins to build fanciful imaginations, they rub him on the chest then vanish. When they have scared their prey and there is no more talala to be hardened, they get on the “bumper to bumper” moves in pairs as the DJ works on his machine.

In short, they like conquering the dance floor with what one of them called “Girl power”, a concept based on the belief that all men “think with their cruise missiles” and that the way to get them out of the floor is to “overwork their missiles” on the floor then disappoint them repeatedly when they make stupid advances until they give up.

“…and how do you tell that they are making advances on a dance floor?”, I posed. “They try to touch your butts” came the answer as I decided that it was time to stop “the interview”.

It is this class that has not been too long “on the bottle” and as the disco advanced, they took turns to puke at strategic corners although one or two failed to get there, ending up doing it within an eye shot. She spewed some green stuff that piqued the curiosity of a KISS agent.

At close examination, it emerged that the green stuff was actually bits of si-kuma-wiki (kales) – someone must have returned from Kenya recently – while it looked like some potatoes were also in the menu. Other stuff could not be identified. When they go to Party, they don’t think about taking a “good insurance” by going for meaty alternatives of the Choma type which “can hold the stomach”. It was a side show that demonstrated how the road to adulthood is thorny.

The Party had it’s own share of physical battles as men and women kunjad one another to sort out old scores. It happened that a lady had snatched the former jungu boyfriend of another lady and what started as a discussion as to “why are you following my ex” ended up with Party clothes being torn apart and impromptu referees getting in between to make peace.

There was also the case of a lady who was bitter that a former close friend of hers was spreading propaganda that the lady was selling vyombo in town – a common one. It was difficult to understand the situation because the accused was, until recently, married with two children before calling it quits.

When I move closer to try and play the role of an observer, the strategy was disabled by another Kenyan friend who seemed to know “too much” about the thing. “Ma men we wacha, this is not for KSB”, he said politely as I left in a hurry to provoke another Kenyan about what he thought about the Nonini show. “It was bull-shit”, he said showing signs of extreme inebriation. I had picked enough for KSB and I left quietly, just as I had come. Despite it’s inherent weaknesses, the Nonini show was another time for Kenyans and their friends in Stockholm to relax and loosen up as winter approaches.

Was Nonini Show A Conspiracy To Defraud Wakenya?

nonini poster nonini leaflets at jamhuri curtain raiser

The much publicized Nonini show at ”Plattan” in Vällingby that had been organized by the newly formed ”Leta Mleto Entertainment” was a major disappointment to Kenyans and enthusiasts who paid 200 kr to watch the Artist perform live.

There were two levels of lamentable failures that demoralized Nonini’s fans and undermined the ability of wannabe Kenyan promoters to handle the intricate details of a live show featuring a leading Kenyan Artist of Nonini’s calibre.

According to publicity that continued for a whole month, Nonini was supposed to start performing at 22 hrs. By 2.30 hrs, Nonini was still nowhere to be seen as more than 100 revellers heavily pregnant with expectation waited impatiently for their hero to jump on stage and deliver. There was no official explanation for the delay and fun lovers had to make do with disco music blaring from the speakers.

Kenyans who were working on Sunday and who had counted on leaving the hall by midnight went home without experiencing Nonini on stage because their jobs were more important.

When KSB arrived at the scene to begin covering the event, Evans Kamau, a key figure in the Leta Mleto bandwagon, came to me and warned that “there should be nothing in the Internet” about the show – Holy smoke!

The ban on KSB reflected the general apathy of the organizers on the concept of “Freedom of Information” when it comes to public functions in Sweden and it was easy to notice that the organizing crew badly needed a crash-program on “The Media, The Public And The Right To Know”.

The Nonini show was not an exclusive private event where attendance was by “invitation only”. Secondly, it was not taking place at a private venue where the “Management reserved the right of admission”. The public was paying a whooping 200 kr to experience a leading Kenyan Artist who was performing live at a public venue hired by the organizers. The venue was not hired for a “private” function but for a “public” event promoted through public means.

It was not the first show of its kind taking place in Stockholm. In the past, Artists like the late Lucky Dubbe, Brittney Spears, Israel Vibrations, Ziggy Marley, Mr. Nice, 50 Cents, Nazizi and a host of others have performed in Stockholm and the rules have been very clear. Individuals can take pictures and shoot videos with the only restriction being that any documentation cannot be sold or used for any commercial purposes without express permission of the Artist or the promoters.

If the event was taking place at a Restaurant or some Hotel in town, the ban on KSB could have been legitimate because any documentation at such venues in Sweden needed some kind of agreement since these kind of venues are not exclusively public places.

“ROBBERY WITHOUT VIOLENCE”
Because of its illegal nature, I simply ignored the ban and decided to take pictures as soon as the “curtain raiser” got on stage as Nonini cooled down backstage. They are the only pictures I took. It is at this point that one of the contacts of the organizers came along and requested for a discussion. Since there was a lot of noise in the hall from booming music and since KSB is always open to discussions especially on disputes, we walked out of the hall after which polemics about KSB coverage of the event went back and fourth.

As we were about 20 minutes into discussion, two Kenyans, Milton and Lillian burst out of the hall to inform us that the Nonini show amounted to  “Robbery without violence”. When I enquired, they said that Nonini show was over after only 30 minutes and that they would never return to any Kenyan live show because it was all conmanship. “First, he keeps us waiting until 3 in the morning then he comes and performs for 30 minutes. This is a scandal”, Lillian said.

“The only thing I appreciate is that I have met Kenyans”, Milton said philosophically before the rather sophisticated couple walked away in protest. Our discussion about “Media coverage” ended there as I went back into the hall to find out Ukweli Wa Mambo.

Back in the hall, accusations flowed freely as Kenyan after Kenyan attacked the organizers for having fooled them into paying 200 kr for a 30 minutes show. In Stockholm, live shows where you part with 200 kr normally roll for an average of 3-4 hours with a minimum of 2 hrs being the bottom line. The expectation was that Nonini would perform for at least two hours with occasional breaks spread over the night. To add salt to injury, fans had to wait up to 3.00 hrs (early morning) before they could see Nonini.

According to Manto, a Kenyan, “it is better to attend the Sound of Blackness discos at Norsborg” because at the end of the action, “You feel satisfied”.

When Sound of Blackness brought in DJ Otieno from the United States this Summer, there were no complaints and some revellers felt guilty that the 60 kr they paid for the event was “too little” compared to the treat, given that Otieno had been brought in from the United States.

Likewise, there were no complaints when Sound of Blackness organized this year’s Grand Nymama Choma and charged 100 kr for meat and entrance to disco hall because Wakenya felt that they got their money’s worth. The dominant view at the Nonini show was that it was a “major fraud” where individuals around Leta Mleto might have conspired to use Nonini’s big name to try and rake in quick bucks using Wakenya as objects of wanton exploitation. This is unacceptable.

WHY THE SHOW WAS DELAYED UNTIL 3.00 HRS
According to a survey conducted at the venue, there was no question that Nonini was very good during the 30 minutes he performed. There was unanimity that the Artist should take no responsibility whatsoever for both the disappointment and the massive anger that followed it because revellers who watched him said that he delivered “to satisfaction” during his short time on stage with a few Kenyan ladies grumbling that they had banked on wriggling to “Manzi wa Nairobi”, a hit which the Rapper never performed.

The main problem was that the 30 minutes was not commensurate with the 200 kr Kenyans paid and this is why many revellers felt cheated while others contemplated taking action to get their money back. Unfortunately, the organizers were so smart that they gave no receipts for payments so you couldn’t prove that you had paid.

The question which has to be posed is whether Nonini was paid to perform for 30 minutes as Wakenya were hyped by Leta Mleto that it would be a “Show to remember!” Did Nonini travel all the way from Kenya to perform for 30 minutes at a cost of 200 kr per head or is it Nonini who has become one of the most expensive artists in the world?

It was not until KISS agents were assigned to investigate the reasons behind the media ban and the short performance that the truth of the matter began to emerge.

According to investigations, Nonini was diverted by Leta Mleto to Stockholm while on another undisclosed assignment. The ban on KSB was based on the fear that if publicity about his performance reached the Internet, information about Leta Mleto activities would reach the Swedish authorities and create problems because Leta Mleto was charging 200kr under an arrangement which did not include payment of taxes.

This is the same fear that led to the omission of the figure “200 kr” on the main advertisement leaf-lets that the new group was using to promote the show. Instead of writing “200 kr”, they used the words “mia mbili” (two hundred) so that a non Swahili speaker could not notice the fee immediately.

At first, Leta Mleto had announced that the Nonini show would take place at a pub in Sätra. However, serious disagreements arose on the question of “profit sharing” and other logistics forcing the group to change venue. Because he had to pay his taxes, the pub owner reportedly wanted a share of the gate collection while he insisted that he would pocket all money from drinks, a deal that was not so attractive to Leta Mleto.

The decision to delay the show until 3.00 in the morning was based on the strategy that if the performance started at 22 hrs as had been announced, it would be over in the next half an hour and anybody who came to the venue after Nonini had performed would not accept to pay 200 kr just to dance at the disco. In such a scenario, the profits Leta Mleto had projected for the show would not be realized.

Leta Mleto knew in advance that Nonini would be performing for half an hour but they did not tell anybody about this because such a disclosure could have sold the whole strategy because the truth of the matter is that very few Kenyans will part with 200 kr to watch an Artist perform for just 30 minutes. The whole arrangement was therefore a well-knit conspiracy by Leta Mleto to defraud Kenyans out of their hard earned money and this is a big shame. While the disco session was very successful, the live segment of the treat was a fiasco which should not be allowed to repeat itself in the future.

BANNING KSB WAS BASED ON ILLUSIONS
There are several groups (of the Leta Mleto type) in Sweden which routinely promote Artists from their countries with live shows. “Salem” an Ethiopian dominated group, is one of the most successful in the field and Leta Mleto could as well get there. In fact, there are groups that even manage to hook sponsorships for such events but the bottom line in Sweden is that you have to play the cards “above the table” because you will never get away with several live shows at 200 kr per head without being caught by the Tax authorities.

The ban on KSB at the show was based on the illusion that Leta Mleto could operate in the underground by playing hide and seek games with authorities. In the minds of Leta Mleto wannabes, keeping KSB out of the event would eliminate the element of exposure and reduce the risk of detection, a dangerous premise upon which to base a business venture in this country called Sweden which, nevertheless, is a “Police State”.

According to Mr. Kamau who is behind Leta Mleto, it was Nonini who requested the ban on KSB “because he had seen the blog”. Be that as it may, it was the responsibility of Leta Mleto to educate the Artist on the basic principles of freedom of Information in Sweden because the Artist was not performing in Kenya where you can get away with anything.

Leta Mleto could have informed the artist that the context and venue of the show was “public” and that in this country, even the police cannot stop electronic documentation of a public event. Banning KSB from covering public Kenyan functions is counter productive while such a move only attracts negative publicity as we fight back to defend the right to freedom of Information.

The only reason why KSB did not seek help from authorities to assist interpret the law in the face of a serious violation is because the Party could have come to an abrupt end and we were not going to take responsibility for messing up a Kenyan Party.

There are viable and real opportunities of promoting Kenyan Artists in Sweden. At the same time Kenyans paying 200 kr should get their money’s worth so that they don’t feel fleeced by extortionists posing as promoters.

The Kenyan Embassy in Stockholm failed to fool Swedish authorities by operating Kamukunji as an illegal pub which was not accountable. Kamukunji was closed down in November 1995 in a major scandal that was published in the Swedish press. Kenyans need to promote and support Kenyan groups involved in different ventures. However, these groups should also operate within the law and avoid violating basic rights and freedoms of Kenyans, the general public and various Media Houses like KSB.

Over 10.000 kr Raised For Ailing Naomi

A fund raising that was held on Saturday 27th October at the residence of Janet, a sister to ailing Naomi Wambui, raised over 10.000 kr. Speaking to KSB, Naomi said that she was very grateful to everybody who turned up for the fund raising.

“We appreciate very much and God bless everybody who came to help me”, she said, adding that the final count of the cash is not yet complete.

“I have organized fund raisings before but I have never seen such a big crowd. I know God will open a way for me and I will go through the operation”, she said.

Naomi, whose legal status in Sweden is still being considered by the Swedish Immigration authorities, needs to raise at least 20.000 kr to undergo an urgent eye operation at St Erik’s Eye Hospital in Stockholm.

Arrested Kenyan Is HIV Positive

A Kenyan who was arrested by Swedish police and who was reported to have been jailed is HIV positive. A Swedish official at Solna court clarified on Friday that the Kenyan has not yet been sent to jail but that his case is still going through the Swedish court system.

The Kenyan has been charged with rape and violating the freedom of his ex Swedish woman with whom he had one child. He was charged with violating the woman’s freedom from 1st July 2006 to 28th September 2007, rape on 28th September 2007 while he was also charged with “an attempt to mishandle” the woman on 28th September 2007 at Hässelby in Stockholm city.

The Kenyan is being held in solitary confinement with zero contacts because, according to the Swedish authorities, he might “try to contact the complainant”.

The Kenyan has also been charged with the offence of having several unprotected sexual intercourse with his former woman despite his knowledge that he was HIV positive soon after he returned from a trip to Kenya last year.

The Prosecution noted that in 2001, the Kenyan’s name was entered into the Swedish police register of criminals because of “violent resistance” to arrest and “pocession of a knife at a public place”.

Further, the Kenyan’s name is in Police register for having mishandled his former Swedish woman in 2005. Following the crime, the Kenyan was arrested, tried, found guilty and jailed for the offence.

The woman he was accused of having mishandled is the mother of his first born child. The woman who has currently accused him is the mother of his second child.

According to KSB investigations, the Kenyan was charged on 15th October and on the following day, he was picked up by police from his work place after which he was taken to Court last Friday the 19th October.

The case will come up again on November 2nd 2007. In the meantime, the Court ruled that the Kenyan will continue to remain in custody.

Kenyans To Meet At Wananchi Pavilion – Friday

Kenyans and friends are meeting on Friday October 26th at the Wananchi Pavilion to evaluate the political situation both in Kenya and in Sweden. The meeting begins at 18.30.

Although there is no major item on the agenda, discussions of the last meeting at the Pavilion are likely to continue. The main points last time revolved around possibilities of a joint strategy of Kenyans in Sweden, political groups, organizations and other interested parties to exert pressure on major political players in Kenya on the question of dual citizenship and voting from abroad.

The Pavilion is increasingly becoming a regular meeting place for Kenyans in Stockholm. Last Friday, a Kenyan banker who was in Sweden on official engagement was one of the attendees. He briefed Kenyans about the situation in the country and said that Equity Bank was a political Bank which is likely to collapse at some stage especially if it becomes clear that President Mwai Kibaki will loose elections. He warned Kenyans whose relatives are engaged in the Bank to warn them, saying that the alarm bells had already been sounded in Kenya.

He said that in Kenya, many groups and organizations had emerged to address member’s problems and praised Kenyans for setting up the Pavilion to facilitate meetings between Kenyans in Stockholm. Also present was a Southern Sudanese national who briefed members about the situation in his country in relation to the peace agreement signed between the Sudanese government and the SPLA. He said that the agreement had collapsed and that if urgent discussions are not held between the parties, there was risk that war could break between the government and SPLA.

Tanzanian Witchdoctor Takes Kenyans In Stockholm By Storm

A Tanzanian woman has reportedly hooked a group of Kenyans in Skarpnäck with Juju. According to a KISS agent who has been investigating her activities, Kenyans are trooping to a flat where the woman lives with another Kenyan woman who has accommodated her. The woman is very secretive and is hardly seen in public because she has claimed that there are some people who want to kill her for unspecified reasons.

The woman’s areas of “magical powers” are reported to be palm-reading to tell the future and identification of Kenyans who have been bewitched with all sorts of Juju. A handful of Kenyans with social and romantic problems are said to be queuing to get her wisdom on possible solutions.

Whether it is a marriage in crisis, lack of a job, social problem, housing problem, lack of friends, isolation in Stockholm, alcoholism, drug addiction, dreams about riches, disease or whatever, it is rumoured that she has ready made answers “that could open your eye and change your whole life for ever”.Apparently, the woman is offering her services for free arguing that her agenda is not to profiteer through her talents but to help the needy.

Kenyans who have witnessed her in action say that she can tell you lots of things about your life just by showing her your palm. The story sounds cartoonish but a Kenyan who is conversant with the woman’s modus operandi said that when she takes a bath, someone has to stand by the door of the bathroom until she is done for reasons that have been kept top secret. Very little is known about the woman and investigations are continuing.

Kenyan National Sent To Swedish Jail

Rumours are spreading in Stockholm that a Kenyan national has been sent to jail by a Swedish court after going through a trial which lasted a few weeks. Details are scanty but according to KISS agents working on the case, the Kenyan has been residing in Stockholm for more than 10 years, is a father of two children while he is in his early 30s.

The Kenyan was at the Kiboi Memorial service last month while he was last seen at the Wazee Hukumbuka Party that was held in Märsta at the end of last month. According to reports, the Kenyan was sent to jail on an offence related to assault.

The Kenyan is not known to be a criminal and reports that he might have landed in jail surprised observers who know him. A Kenyan he works with and who lives in Vällingby could not be reached for comment.

Recently, a Kenyan was sent to jail for infecting a Swedish woman with HIV while another Kenyan who was facing charges at about the same time was sent to rehab after being acquitted of rape but found guilty of “minor assault”.

The prosecution failed to prove a case of rape against the Kenyan although it could be shown that he had “mistreated” but not brutalized a Swedish woman prompting the court to send him for rehab for two months.

Lots of Kenyans and friends who were present took turns to give pieces of advice to the young couples while welcoming the young Kevin with dance and ululations as per Kikuyu culture.

Some Kenyans who attended the Kenyatta day function in Stockholm went straight to the function after the reception was over.

The event was attended by Mr. Mark Gaya, Mr. Daniel Mwaura, Mr. And Mrs Makan Macharia, Mr. And Mrs Nashon Mbugua, Mr. And Mrs Willy Nyambok, Ms Winnie Mukaru, Mrs Grace Nyambura, Ms Naomi Wambui, Mrs Wamuyu (who came all the way from Uppsala), Mrs Margarette Njihia, Mama Mberi  among others.A Kenyan took the opportunity to welcome (in advance) Kenyans who were present to his residence in anticipation of the arrival of his family and two children from Kenya.

The Kenyan said that he was happy to announce that the DNA test he took some weeks back to prove that he was the biological father of his children was out and added that his political enemies who have been using the issue of his kids to undermine him should now be ashamed.

A Kenyan reportedly informed the Immigration authorities that the Kenyan who took the DNA test was not the real father of the kids and that the kids had been fathered by a neighbour when the Kenyan in question was busy politicking.

Report On Kenyatta Day Reception In Stockholm

ambassador purity wakenya wakenya msosi

After a stressful week for Ambassador Purity Muhindi marked by tremendous pounding of the Kenyan Embassy by Kenyans in Stockholm on the contentious issue of “Selective invitations” to Kenyatta day reception, the Ambassador can now relax while her Deputy, Ms Jenipher Awuor, can now take a deep breath of fresh air because the event is finally over.

Although it was the first Kenyatta day that was being marked by the Embassy, Kenyans like Mr. Joseph Munene, Ms Josephine Ng’ang’a and Ms Mercy Wanjohi did not hesitate  to fire missiles at the Embassy for failing to send them invitation letters to attend the event. Numerous Kenyans also complained on the side-lines thereby elevating the issue of Jamhuri invitations to the level of a controversy.

When Kenyatta day was eventually held on Saturday 20th October, it was like the Embassy had abandoned the line of “selective invitations”, choosing instead, to send a clear message that the event was open to all Kenyans.

In a damage control mechanism, Mr. Geoge Kinywa, the First secretary, announced at Bagarmossen Church that all Kenyans were welcome to the event with or without invitations. When the Kenya Social Forum took contact with the Embassy on Thursday, the line was the same – that the event was “Open to all Kenyans”.

This was in sharp contrast to the text of the invitation letter circulated to a section of Kenyans and which did not include a wider invitation of members of the community to the function. Much of the criticisms that was directed at the Embassy was based on the understanding that the invitation letter was very specific with the name of the Guest clearly spelt out on the letter. In cases where a guest was invited with a spouse, this was clearly stated.

Despite the hoopla that surrounded the Kenyatta day invitations, the event was well attended and there was no attempt whatsoever to stop anybody from entering the reception hall. Once you handed over your Jacket to the staff at the entrance of the Restaurant, you were given a jacket number after which you just walked in to be confronted with a forest of intoxicants plus soft drinks patched on two tables strategically placed at the left and right wings of the oblong-shaped reception hall.

Polite Restaurant staff then asked you kindly to place your order. You should have been there to witness how Kenyans behave like Saints when making orders of alcoholic beverages.  A phrase that was common among “gate-crashers was: “I was not invited but I am here”.

MRS MURAYA, NATIONAL ANTHEM AND EMBASSY CONNECTIONS

Ambassador Purity, her hubby Mr. Muhindi and Purity’s second in command, Ms Awuor were on standby at the entrance to shake hands with incoming guests who were then ushered into the spacious reception hall that was immaculately arranged for the occasion.

Purity was clad in her distinguishing “Kitenge series” complete with a head-scarf while Awuor followed majestically in her foot-steps. The two top “Embassy Ladies” seem to favour swanky dresses and their affinity for Kitenges appears hooked on a strong desire to send an “African”, if not “Kenyan message” to the fashion industry.

On the surface, there was no disdain towards hard-core Embassy critics and it was almost impossible to detect that the reception was taking place against a back drop of venomous attacks and complaints especially on the question of invitations.

The Embassy had worked very hard to put together an assembly of drinks including Tusker which blended with the meaty delicacies that were on offer to provide a fantastic moment of Kenyans and friends in Sweden to engage in a moment of undisturbed consumption of tax payer’s money as they chatted away the evening.

The creativity was so original that even Sambosas had been taxied in to complete the Kenyan menu. When I tried to enquire from Awuor a few days ago the amount of tax payer’s money that had been pumped into the meat and booze in the name of Kenyatta day, she admitted that she didn’t actually know. May be, the Treasurer knows better.

There was a period of familiarization and after a sizable crowd appeared to have converged, the Program kicked off. It was non other than Mrs Lisa Muraya who won the heart of the Ambassador who, in turn, honoured her with the privilege of leading the guests in singing the Kenyan national anthem. There is no debate about Mrs Muraya’s angelic voice and she took up the challenge with gusto. She had the text of the anthem on paper and this suggested that she was in the game plan much earlier.

If you have forgotten, the Murayas are the latest Kenyan couple to have made history when it comes to Kenya Stockholm public weddings. As she prepared to take the audience through the anthem, it was impossible to ignore the expectation of her powerful voice which first surfaced in public with a captivating Love song she weaved for her new husband at her spectacular wedding mid last month.

The couple is currently enjoying a measure of respect for having pulled the wedding in a situation where relationships are collapsing and wives are being snatched without notice in complicated Kenya Stockholm. Of cause, Mr. Muraya was also there clad in a black and white stripped suite to busk in the glory of his wife being the lead singer of the National anthem and there was no talk of “where is your husband?”

The fact that Mrs Muraya led the singing of the national anthem was a confirmation of the mysterious bond between the Kenyan embassy and the Murayas. From Kiss agents who have been investigating the connection, the main link in the chain seem to be Mrs Catherine Kiboi, an “Administrative attaché” at the Embassy and a member of the Bagarmossen Church where the Murayas have a very strong base.

At her wedding, it was Mrs Kiboi’s silver Benz that dropped Lisa at the Church while Ambassador Purity delivered the “Embassy stamp” by lacing the wedding with her presence together with her husband Mr. Muhindi. It must be remembered that Purity did not attend the wedding of Pastor Beatrice mid this year although the wedding was also public. Beatrice is a known critic of the Ambassador, a factor that could have influenced her decision to skip the wedding.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR KENYANS IN DIASPORA

After the National anthem, Jenipher Awuor stepped behind the microphone and welcomed her boss to address the audience. Decision to include the address in the Program was a deviation from previous Embassy routine at public receptions like Jamhuri day because the Ambassador never addresses the guests.

By delivering an address, the Embassy seem to have responded to criticisms that public holidays should not be converted into a two hour drinking spree without the guests being reminded about the significance of the National day being celebrated. At the Jamhuri day last year, Purity never addressed the crowd.

In a well prepared and elaborate speech, the Ambassador said that the government believes that Kenyans in Diaspora can make a valuable contribution towards transforming Kenya into a middle-income country.

“In this respect, many initiatives have been taken and continue to be taken by individuals, groups, organizations, the private sector and the government to encourage the Kenyan Diaspora to participate even more actively in our National development”, she said.

She said that the large community of Kenyans in Diaspora contribute Ksh 67 billion annually through remittances, cash that, she said, had helped transform the economy substantially, adding that the potential to impact the economy even more remained enormous.

She said that “Investment opportunities exists in many areas including infrastructure, housing, equity, shares and Nairobi Stock Exchange”.

She informed the audience that in recognition of skills of Kenyans in the Diaspora, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had established a Diaspora Community Department whose duty among others is to place qualified Kenyans in International jobs.

“We urge those of you in a position to utilize this opportunity to make use of it”, she told the attentive audience. She said that Kenyans in Diaspora had much to contribute in terms of skills and knowledge transfer, arguing that with such a contribution, the “brain drain” in Kenya could be converted into “brain gain”.

KENYA EMBASSY WEB SITE LAUNCHED

In a speech that appeared to have been designed to ignite the interest of Kenyans in Scandinavia, the Ambassador said that the government was aware about special concerns of Kenyans in Diaspora especially on the issue of dual citizenship, voting from abroad, travel facilitation and simplification of rules to facilitate Banking. She said that the government was looking into the issues.

She said that the Kenyan economy had grown with 6% and that projections with the 2030 plan was to see an annual average growth of the economy with at least 10%.

She praised the growth in Revenue collection which, she said, increased by 106% last year. She also mentioned the growing economic cooperation between Kenya and Sweden, the success of the CDF funds and praised Kenyan heroes who were being honoured at Kenyatta day.

“The example of our freedom fighters reminds us that ultimately, we live together with one another and for one another – Kwa umoja pamoja”, she said.

She added: “Kenyatta day is an invitation for all of us to pick up the challenge to transcend the things that divide us and promote the things that bind us in a collective endeavour to fulfil the dreams of our Nationalism for a peaceful, wealthy and caring Nation of wealthy and selfless people”. Details of the Ambassador’s speech will be released later by KSB.

After her presentation, the Ambassador announced the launching of the Kenya-Embassy website in Sweden.

“To facilitate communication between us, the Mission is happy to launch here with it today the official web site of Kenya Embassy in Sweden”, she said. The launching of the site is yet another piece of evidence that the Embassy was responding to criticism. Kenyans have been calling for the site saying that it could help with communication between the Embassy and the community.

The address of the site is www.kenyaembassystockholm.com. Ambassador Purity said that the Embassy was proud that the web site had been developed by Kenyans under the umbrella of Safi Media. A presentation of the site on a projector was made by Safi Media. The Ambassador used the occasion to introduce Embassy staff to the guests.

After the Kenyatta day reception, eyes are now fixed on Jamhuri day scheduled for 12th December. It can only be hoped that a repeat of the stigmas that characterized the Kenyatta day will not surface when time to celebrate Jamhuri day comes around.

New Attack On Kenya Embassy Over Kenyatta Day

This week has been a ”Season of harvests” when it comes to attacks on the Kenyan Ambassador to Scandinavia Mrs Purity Muhindi and the Kenyan Embassy in general – thanks to a “defective invitation” of Wakenya to this year’s Kenyatta day reception scheduled for Saturday this week.

The latest salvo has been fired by Ms Josephine Ng’ang’a (Mama Wambui) who was very bitter that she has been left out of the Kenyatta day invitation loop despite the fact that she is a Kenyan citizen by birth.

“I am very bitter that the Ambassador has not invited me to Kenyatta day although I am a Kenyan citizen by birth”, Josephine told KSB. She disclosed that even her friend Mercy Wanjohi has also not been invited although she is a Kenyan Passport holder.

She said that from her own contacts, she has learnt that those who have been invited are mainly Swedish citizens who have nothing to do with Kenyatta day while many Kenyans have been left out.

Mama Wambui said that it was unfortunate that Kenyans who have abandoned Kenyan citizenship and taken up Swedish Passports were the first to be invited because of their connections to Embassy officials. “This is a scandal”, she said.

“Some of these Swedish citizens are heading bogus Kenyan political Parties in Sweden and although they cannot even vote in Kenya, they were the first to be invited by the Embassy”, she said.

KSB has learnt that numerous members of the Swedish diplomatic community are among the top guests invited.

Mama Wambui told KSB that she will gate crash at the reception because she is a Kenyan Passport holder. “I would like to meet and talk to this Ambassador”, she thundered on telephone.

“Kenyatta day is a day when Kenyans are supposed to enjoy. Kenyatta did not struggle for Swedes neither is Kenyatta day a Swedish National day. All Kenyans should have been invited to the function without discrimination”, she said.

According to Ms Jenipher Vivian Awuor, the condescending  Principle counsellor who routinely holds brief for the Ambassador during times of crisis, the Embassy does not have contacts of all Kenyans and so the Mission could not invite everybody. She said that not all Kenyans filled out the forms which were sent to them and in which the Embassy had requested personal contacts.

The forms were rejected by majority of Kenyans because the Embassy had also requested people’s birthdays and other sensitive information in a move that was seen by critics as connected to possible rigging of elections in case the Kenyan Constitution was amended to allow Kenyans to vote from abroad.

“We sent out letters to Kesofo (Kenya Social Network in Sweden) and we told them to tell Kenyans, Awuor said with a shimmer in her voice as she blamed KSB for the current predicament facing the Mission over the Kenyatta day invitations.

According to Mama Wambui, the Embassy could not claim that they did not have her contacts because she has, in the past, renewed her Passport at the Embassy by filling in an application form where she also wrote her address.

“If that is the case, they should have used the Internet. When Pastor Beatrice was wedding, she told Kenyans that she did not have contacts of all Kenyans and sent invitations through the Internet”, she countered.

She said that if a whole government Office like the Kenyan Embassy could not understand that it could use the Internet to reach Kenyans in Sweden, then the Ambassador (Purity Muhindi) is useless.

“At first, I supported this Ambassador because she is a woman like me but now, I have a very low opinion of her”, she declared, adding that the truth must be told when the government comes up with official nonsense.

She also warned leaders of Kenyan political Parties who had taken Swedish citizenship to “stop payukaring” because even if they travel to Kenya, they cannot vote since they have sold their citizenship. “They were the first to be invited to Kenyatta day but I challenge them to follow me to the frontlines to make a difference by voting”, she said.

Embassy’s Kenyatta Day Invitations: Statement By ODM-Scandinavia

The Orange Democratic Movement in Scandinavia (ODM-S) has learnt with great bitterness that the Kenyan Ambassador to Scandinavia H.E. Mrs Purity Muhindi never sent out invitation letters to all Kenyans in Stockholm for the Kenyatta day reception scheduled for Saturday 20th October at Kista between 17.00 hrs and 20.00 hrs. Instead, she sent invitation letters to selective Kenyans in Sweden.

Our understanding is that Kenyatta day is a National holiday in Kenya and as such, every Kenyan is entitled to be part of the celebrations be they in Kenya or abroad. The Kenyan Embassy is the official representative of the Kenyan government in Scandinavia and, naturally, one would expect that when inviting Kenyans to a function like Kenyatta day, the Embassy would be sensitive enough to notice that selective invitations to the function would not just have far reaching and negative effects but would also be counterproductive and undemocratic.

ODM-Scandinavia has come into contact with several Kenyans who have expressed concerns that they have not been invited to the function. Majority of these Kenyans are looking for explanations and as a leading Kenyan Opposition Party in Scandinavia, ODM-Scandinavia’s Executive committee thinks that the Party should take up the matter with the Ambassador and question the Ambassador’s real intentions.

ODM-Scandinavia calls upon the Kenyan Ambassador H.E Mrs Purity Muhindi to “act Nationally” especially when it comes to National issues. All Kenyans are equal regardless of their ethnic backgrounds and inviting some Kenyans and leaving others out of the Kenyatta day reception amounts to discrimination.

We therefore call upon the Embassy to revise its strategy of selective invitation of Kenyans to this year’s Kenyatta day by inviting everybody.

The Embassy might argue that it does not have the contacts of all Kenyans in Sweden. Our view is that Kenyans in Stockholm have a well established media which reaches majority of Kenyans and which the Embassy could exploit to make it clear that all Kenyans are welcome to the function with or without invitation letters.

To invite Kenyans selectively at Kenyatta day is divisive and uncalled for. The Kenyan government is paying for the reception and therefore, there is no justification whatsoever as to why some Kenyans should be left out of the function.

We hope that Ambassador Purity will notice the disadvantages of her current choice of sending letters selectively and possibly act before Saturday when the reception is scheduled. Kenyans must stand up to be counted in the condemnation of the way in which the Ambassador has acted especially on this issue.

We, as Kenyans, are one people and divisive tactics that will split the Kenyan community should not be tolerated by any progressive Kenyan at home or abroad. ODM-Scandinavia encourages Kenyans to stand up for their rights by attending the function with or without invitation letters.

Mr. Martin Ngatia
Vice chairperson
ODM-Scandinavia Executive committee
