Martin Ngatia Sends Condolences To Kalonzo’s Family
Mr. Martin Ngatia, one of the initiative takers of ODM-Scandinavia and Chairperson of Kenya Scandinavia Democratic Movement (KESDEMO), has sent a message of condolence to one of ODM-Kenya luminaries, Mr. Kalonzo Musyoka and his entire family, following the death of her mother this week.
Speaking to Kenya Stockholm Blog, Mr. Ngatia said that the loss of a mother is always a sad event and hoped that Kalonzo’s family would have the strength to go through the loss.
“Some of us could not even bury their parents during the Moi dictatorship and as a person who has lost a parent, I understand the situation of Mr. Kalonzo’s family”, Mr. Ngatia said.
The KESDEMO Chairman hoped that Mr. Kalonzo would quickly go through the mourning process and get back to the struggle to remove Narc from power at next year’s General elections.
ODM-Scandinavia was briefed about the sad news by ODM-Kenya headquarters hours after Kalonzo’s mother passed away in Kenya.
In the meantime, Mr. Ngatia also sent condolences to the family of Mrs Florence Asum, a Kenyan resident in Stockholm, following the death of Mrs Asum’s brother. Mr. Ngatia said that death and bereavement is a permanent feature which everyone has to face in life. Friends are gathering at Mrs Asum’s residence in Bålsta to console the bereaved family.

Tinga Tinga Jazz Band Thrills The Crowd In Stockholm
Tinga Tinga Jazz band yesterday thrilled a huge crowd of about 100 revelers who had turned up at Södra theatre in Stockholm to enjoy themselves. Led by Odhis Jangoma, key vocalist and backed by Benta Achieng, it was all systems go as revelers broke into dance when the beats tended to saturate their systems.
From the background was Onyango Raringo, solo guitarist whose rhythms blended with Achieng’s voice to send cool vibrations across the crowd, provoking them into occasional but slow gyrations.
Benta sung songs about the mysteries of life, loneliness and the importance of using condoms. A key attraction which galvanized the audience was performance by Edward Odhiambo who played Orutu (a traditional Luo music equipment).
The crowd was a mix up of Swedes, Kenyans, Congolese, Sudanese Ugandans and other nationalities. Vumbi, a Solo guitarist well known within the Kenyan community together with musician Moses Trubadur, were among the key African musicians who attended the function.
Josiah Omotto, a community organizer from Kibera who had traveled with the group chipped in from time to time to give short pieces of information about the group and life in Kibera. He thanked SIDA for having made it possible for Tinga Tinga to come to Sweden and hoped that next year, they would be back.
Mr. Omoto said that since the group came to Sweden, they have been pressing buttons on the wall and seeing electricity while at the same time pressing on metals and seeing water. He hoped for a life where water and electricity would be available to everybody, a comment which drew a wild applause from the crowd which appeared to have been enjoying every minute of the show. Omotto was drawing parallels between life in Sweden where water and electricity are taken for granted and life in Kibera where water and electricity are a big luxury.
The group has been on a tight schedule and attempts to divert them to have a special sessions for Kenyans did not materialize as they were set to leave for Kenya on Friday September 29th at 6.00.
Several Kenyans attended the functions including Winnie Mukaru, Chairlady of the Kenya Social Forum in Sweden (Kesofo), Mark Gaya, Richie, Beryl, Jackie, Maurine, Dan Aroka, Barry Owino, Alex Wagunya, Gerry Midenyo, Lillian among others. Pictures and a slide show of the Tinga Tinga performance can be viewed at the newly launched Kenya Stockholm Picture collection.

Kiboi Memorial In The News
Body of Kenyan diplomat due home tomorrow
By TIMES REPORTER
The body of a Kenyan diplomat who died in a mysterious house fire in Oslo, Norway arrives tomorrow.
A low profile memorial service for the late diplomat, Mr James Kiboi, took place at St Emmanuel Church in Stockholm on Monday.
Although a decision to hold the service was taken on Friday last week after the body was released to the family, sources say many Kenyans learnt of the service only hours before the event.
The memorial service came in the wake of concerns by the head of “Wazee Hukumbuka Club” in Sweden, Mr Gerry Midenyo, that such a service was necessary. Midenyo said it would be wrong for Kiboi’s body to be transported to Kenya without a memorial service in Stockholm.
The Kenyan ambassador to Sweden, Daniel Mukiri Kinyanjui, dismissed rumours in Stockholm that Mr Kiboi’s family had been denied the right to view the body in Oslo last week.
“As far as I am concerned, the family has taken control of the body and this is the protocol,” he said.
Talk in Stockholm had it that Kiboi’s family had been informed that they could only view the body in Kenya due to some unspecified reasons.
In the meantime, there is still silence in Norway about the circumstances that might have led to Kiboi’s death. Contacts in Kenya say the general position is that Kiboi may have been killed. “The issue for us is the details,” a source said.
Mutinda To Speak At ABF-Huset In Stockholm Next Week
Gerald Mutinda, a Kenyan who works with CeedCo and who KSB reported about earlier, will be the main speaker at a public function on October 3rd at ABF-Huset at Sveavägen 41 in Stockholm from 18.00. Mr. Mutinda will speak about the threat against small farmers around the world.
Multinational food companies like Wal Mart are spreading their wings around the world. What is the consequence for small scale farmers around the world? Mutinda’s speech will look closely at Kenya, a country seen in the West as one of the world’s poorest countries. Mutinda will address the question as to whether the expansion of multinational food companies is a threat to Kenya’s small scale farmers.
Mr. Björn Lindh, the Chief of Communication at “Cooperation Without Boarders”, will present a report entitled “Small Farmers Big Market”.
The function has been organized by ABF, Cooperation Without Boarders and Attac Stockholm.

Tinga Tinga Jazz Band Playing In Stockholm
Tinga Tinga Jazz Band from the slums of Kibera in Nairobi is currently playing in Stockholm. The group has already played at Pub Katalin in Uppsala and at Torg Book Exhibition in Göteborg. On Thursday Sept 28th, the group will be playing at Södra Teaterns Lilla scen in Stockholm from 21 hrs.
In Kenya, Tinga Tinga Jazz Band works with a local organization called Umande Trust. Josiah Omotto who hails from Umande in Kbera is accompanying the group. The Tinga Tinga trip is part of an on-going project called “Urban Policy” financed by the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA). A book entitled “More Urban Less Poor” has been published through SIDA as part of the Project.
“The book – More Urban Less Poor – fills a vacuum because there is almost no literature which describes the situation in the towns in third world countries”, says Thomas Melin who works at the Department of Urban Development at SIDA. ODM-Scandinavia In The News In Kenya Times
By Abdallah Seif
A GROUP calling itself the Kenya Scandinavian Democratic Movement (KESDEMO) have said that they will mobilise Kenyans living abroad to vote against the Kibaki Government come the next general election.
The movement’s officials living in Stockholm have backed the newly-formed Orange Democratic Movement-Kenya (ODM-K), saying it was the only party that could bring change to the country.
An official of the group, Martin Ngatia, said already, they were in the process of setting up an ODM-Kenya office, to coordinate campaigns in Scandinavia to ensure the party seizes power come the next polls.
The KESDEMO officials complained that the Kibaki Government had short-changed Kenyans and reverted the country back to political dictatorship and graft.
They accused the NARC Government for failing to fulfil its pre-election pledges that included rooting out corruption, to deliver a new Constitution and promote human rights.
Ngatia said the Government had failed to address burning issues such as the Goldenberg scandal, ethnic cleansing, and land grabbing.
The Kenyan community living abroad will help remove the Kibaki regime to replace it with more progressive leaders who will address critical issues affecting the country.
Among the issues that they want ODM to address when elected to power are; the delivery of the new Constitution based on the Bomas draft in their first year in office, with the inclusion of clauses of dual citizenship and mechanism for voting abroad.
They also want the new Government to appointment public servants on merit.

Low Profile Memorial Service For Late Diplomat James Kiboi In Stockholm
A low profile memorial service for the late diplomat Mr. James Kiboi took place at St Emanuel Church in Stockholm yesterday Monday 25th September from 18.00. Although a decision to hold the service was taken on Friday last week after the body was released to the family, many Kenyans learnt about the service only hours before the event.
When Kenya Stockholm Blog called the Kenyan Embassy to find out why there had been no public announcement about the event, the Ambassador, Mr. Daniel Mukiri Kinyanjui, said that things have been moving very fast and that there has been no time to inform everybody.
“What I know is that there was an announcement at St Emanuel church on Sunday that the service would take place on Monday”, Mr. Kinyanjui said. The Ambassador was on his way out of the office and sounded exhausted.
Very few Kenyans attend Sunday services at St Emanuel church and it is not strange that the message never got home. A better venue that the announcement could also have been made is St Klara Church which has a Swahili congregation from East Africa and where Pastor Beatrice Kamau, a Kenyan national, also preaches. It is the same Church where Wangari Mathai delivered her speech when she came to Sweden last year while the Juliet memorial was also held at the same Church because it is more popular with Kenyans in Stockholm.
Both Kesofo and Kenya Stockholm Blog were also kept in the dark about the memorial service. KSB has learnt that some key personalities controlling events around the family have been unhappy with KSB because the blog-spot has been “revealing too much information” on Kiboi’s death. An underground Kenyan Pastor who has been close to Kiboi’s family has been in the fore-front in spreading anti-KSB propaganda. In fact, KSB has been in the front line in questioning the dubious circumstances under which Kiboi is reported to have died.
The biggest concern is that portions of the Kenyan media have been lifting stories from KSB then publishing them in Kenya. Immediately after Kiboi’s death, the family took contact with KSB through Kiboi’s Aunt to complain about portions of a story that said that Kiboi was seen on a table with three women at Masawa Bar in Oslo the night he died. Another contact in Finland married to the sister of Kiboi’s wife also expressed similar concerns.
Through a family representative and Kiboi’s Aunt, KSB has constantly updated the family about published and unpublished detail on Kiboi’s death. The main struggle has been between the right of Kenyans in Stockholm to know what may have happened to Mr. Kiboi and the right of the family to privacy especially on sensitive issues that touches on Kiboi’s credibility.
Many Kenyans who interacted with Mr. Kiboi failed to attend the Friday memorial service because they did not know about it. Mr. Moses Trubadur, a Kenyan musician based in Stockholm, said that it was unfortunate that the Embassy had failed to inform Kenyans about the service. It is still not clear why Kiboi’s memorial service was being treated as a private or semi-secret matter when Kiboi was a public official who had many friends who deserved to know about his memorial service.
The memorial service came in the wake of concerns by Mr. Gerry Midenyo, head of “Wazee Hukumbaka Club” in Kesofo, that such a service was necessary. Mr. Midenyo told KSB that it would be wrong for Kiboi’s body to be transported to Kenya without a memorial service in Stockholm. The Kenyan challenged the Embassy, the Kenya Social Forum in Sweden and people around the family to organize the service.
The Ambassador, Mr. Kinyanjui, dismissed rumours in Stockholm that Mr. Kiboi’s family had been denied the right to view the body in Oslo last week.
“As far as I am concerned, the family has taken control of the body and this is the protocol”, he said.
Talk in Stockholm had it that Kiboi’s family had been informed that they could only view the body in Kenya due to some unspecified reasons.
Sources have told KSB that Kiboi’s body will probably leave for Kenya on Friday September 29th. The body will be transported to Kenya directly from Norway. The Kenyan government will foot the bill.
In the meantime, there is still silence in Norway about the circumstances that might have led to Mr. Kiboi’s death. People who were around Kiboi moments before his death have made a unilateral decision to give Kiboi’s family time to mourn. They have decided to take it easy about narrations about what happened as a sign of respect to Kiboi’s family, friends and sympathizers who are all in deep mourning.
Contacts in Kenya who have sent mail to KSB say that the general position at home is that Kiboi might have been killed. “The issue for us is the details”, wrote a contact. A police report about Kiboi’s death has still not been released by the Norwegian police. KSB is awaiting the report and will publish its details as soon as they become available.

Dancan Munala Warns Narc-Kenya Politicians
Mr. Dancan Munala Simba, a Kenyan resident in Stockholm, has said that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM-K) is the way forward in Kenyan politics. Mr. Munala told Kenya Stockholm Blog that plans to set up ODM-Scandinavia were long overdue.
“I am so happy that the initiative takers of ODM-Scandinavia came up with an idea that has been burning in me for days. It is within our power to create a new Kenya”, Mr. Munala said.
He said that Kenya had reached a point of “political stagnancy” and suggested that the country needed a new direction in leadership that could save the nation. He said that ODM-Kenya had a simple strategy that majority of Kenyans could understand.
“Narc-Kenya politicians are people who simply want to protect what they have been stealing from Kenyans”, he said. The pianist said that Kenyans are now awake and warned Narc-Kenya politicians that their days were numbered. “Nark-Kenya politicians are boiling a pot of water that they will never be able to cool down”, he warned.
Citing the biblical story of Noah, Mr. Munala said that Narc-Kenya politicians still had time to cross over and board the boat. He said that if those around Narc-Kenya continued to wait, it will be too late because the “Passover shall have been over”.

ODM-Scandinavia Initiative Takers Release Draft Political Program
As a group of serious Kenyan organizations in Scandinavia and individuals very much concerned with the on going political process in Kenya, we have decided to take a position in relation to the political situation in our country.
Since the National Rainbow Coalition (Narc) took power on a popular platform for change and transformation, we have watched with horror how the government led by President Mwai Kibaki has destroyed the country and reverted Kenya back to political dictatorship and authoritarianism.
Every key election promise Narc made to Kenyan voters before the December 2002 election has been broken. The Kibaki government has failed to end corruption, tribalism, nepotism, human rights violations and wanton plunder of the Kenyan economy by a tiny thieving Kikuyu ruling class.
Burning issues like the murder of the late Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Robert Ouko, the Goldenberg corruption scandal, Ethnic cleansing during the Moi dictatorship, Land grabbing by the rich and forced eviction of Kenyans from their lands have all not been addressed.
Instead, billions of tax payer’s money has been wasted on Commissions of Inquiries whose conclusions are gathering dust on the shelves. Corrupt personalities like Professor George Saitoti and others linked to multiple corruption scandals in the past have either been cleansed through the system or left to walk away with their loot. Needless to say, new corruption scandals like Anglo-Leasing have sprouted under the Kibaki administration as the Mount Kenya Mafia plundering the economy continues to entrench itself in power.
Njenga Karume, an economic criminal and former home guard, has boasted that the Mount Kenya Mafia will maintain power up to the year 2017. This is the last signal that those around Kibaki are drunk with power and that this Mafia cartel should be voted out of office.
Most importantly, the dictatorship of President Mwai Kibaki has failed to; deliver a new Constitution to the Kenyan people, address the crisis of unemployment especially among the youth and to address the issue of mass poverty ravaging our people.
In light of these catastrophic failures, we have decided to gather forces with the principle agenda of helping and facilitating the exit of the Kibaki dictatorship and its replacement with a more progressive regime capable of addressing the most immediate and critical issues affecting our country and our people today.
Although outside the country, we view ourselves as part of the democratic process in Kenya and we take it as our responsibility to support the most progressive Movement or Party that we believe, is capable of carrying the political struggle in Kenya forward.
After a careful study of the situation in Kenya, we have come to the conclusion that at this critical time in our country’s history, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM-Kenya) is the best placed Movement that can address the failures of the Kibaki dictatorship.
Consequently, we have decided to unite to set up a branch of ODM in Scandinavia and to use the structure as a campaign platform to ensure that the ODM-Kenya seizes power in the next General elections scheduled for December 2007.
Our support for ODM is based on a “Twelve-Point Program” that we would like ODM-Kenya to address once it seizes power. The basic principle that has united and propelled us into setting up ODM-Scandinavia is based on the agreement that once in power, ODM will:
1. Deliver a new Constitution to the Kenyan people based on the Bomas draft within a reasonable period of time, possibly during the first year in office. Clauses in the constitution should unambiguously include dual citizenship and mechanisms for voting by Kenyans abroad.
2. End rampant tribalism and nepotism especially in the appointment of public servants and other government officials.
3. End corruption in all its forms and looting of the Kenyan economy and legislate effective laws that will punish those found to have stolen public funds.
4. Bring to justice thieves in the Narc government and confiscate wealth and property found to have been acquired through corrupt means.
5. Put an end to land grabbing in our country, confiscate all land found to have been grabbed during both the Kenyatta and Kibaki dictatorships and resettle the landless.
6. Guarantee registration of alternative political parties, register parties that have been denied registration under Narc government and protect the multi-party political system that has been under constant threat from both the Moi and Kibaki dictatorships.
7. Stop the retrenchment of workers in Kenya and address the problem of unemployment.
8. Restore the collapsed health care and education system by pooling resources currently being wasted on bogus projects and other wasteful government expenditures.
9. Guarantee freedom of Press and bring to a permanent end State organized attacks on Media houses and constant harassment of journalists.
10. Formulate a proper Foreign policy for Kenya.
11. Change the colonial nature of the Judiciary to reflect current political realities in our country.
12. End the rule by the Mafia in our country.
We have made a conscious decision not to come up with unreasonable demands that ODM will not be able to meet because of its political character.
We are releasing this document as part of a strategy to convince and recruit both Kenyans and supporters into ODM-Scandinavia. After the document has gone into circulation, the next step will be the convening of a public meeting in Stockholm to discuss the document, adjust it if necessary and adopt it.
This will be followed by the election of ODM-Scandinavia’s Interim officials. Once these officials assume office, they will be entrusted with the responsibility of organizing a public launching of ODM-Scandinavia before the movement plunges into election campaigns to install ODM-Kenya to power.
Initiative takers:
Mrs Hellen Opwapo – Stockholm
Mr. Martin Ngatia – Stockholm (Kenya Scandinavia Democratic Movement – KESDEMO)
Mr. Gerry Midenyo – Stockholm
=========================================================================
This is an initiative. If you agree with majority of points above, you could be thinking along the lines of ODM-Scandinavia initiative takers. For endorsement of this document, comments or points of view, send mail to odm_scandinavia@yahoo.com. The initiative takers will get back to you as soon as possible. In the meantime, spread the message and make your contribution towards a new government in Kenya at the end of next year. If you are not a Kenyan who lives in Scandinavia we are still interested in your views. The struggle continues.

ODM-Scandinavia To Be Set Up
Kenya Stockholm Blog has learnt that discussions to set up the Orange Democratic Movement in Scandinavia (ODM-Scandinavia) are underway. Mr. William Atinga, a top ODM-Kenya strategist, left Stockholm last Wednesday 20th September after extensive discussions about initiatives to set up a branch of ODM in Scandinavia. Following discussions between Mr. Atinga and ODM supporters in Scandinavia, a nod has been given by ODM-Kenya headquarters in Nairobi for the setting up of the Movement’s branch in Scandinavia ahead of next year’s General elections.
A document that has been obtained by Kenya Stockholm Blog outlining the basis of the formation of the branch is currently under circulation among ODM-Kenya supporters in Scandinavia. After circulating the document, the strategy is that a public meeting will be called among ODM-Scandinavia supporters.
At the meeting, the document will come under discussion before it is ratified. This will be followed by the election of Interim officials whose names will then be forwarded to ODM-Kenya headquarters in Nairobi. After everything is set, ODM-Scandinavia will be launched publicly at an official function in Stockholm expected to be graced by a top ODM-Kenya luminary.
A key demand contained in the ODM-Scandinavia document under circulation is that once it takes power, ODM-Kenya should deliver a new Constitution to the Kenyan people “within a reasonable period of time” and based on the Bomas draft. The document states that there should be “unambiguous clauses” in the Constitution granting both dual citizenship to Kenyans and the right of Kenyans abroad to vote in General elections.
Another key demand is that once in power, ODM-Kenya should put to an end corruption, bring to book corrupt officials of the current government and confiscate wealth and property found to have been acquired through corrupt means.
Other key demands are that once it seizes power; ODM-Kenya should end tribalism and nepotism especially in the appointment of public servants, bring to justice thieves in the Narc government, guarantee registration of political parties, guarantee press freedom, stop attacks on media houses, stop harassment of journalists and end rule by Mafia cartels.
The document says in part: “Although outside the country, we view ourselves as part of the democratic process in Kenya and we take it as our responsibility to support the most progressive Movement or Party that we believe, is capable of carrying the political struggle in Kenya forward”.
Kenya Stockholm Blog is processing the document and will publish it at the blog site as soon as possible.

”Organize A Memorial Service For The Late James Kiboi”, Says Gerry Midenyo
Mr. Gerry Midenyo, a member of the Kenya Social Forum in Sweden (Kesofo) and head of “Wazee Hukumbuka Club” within Kesofo, has said that a proper memorial service should be organized in Stockholm for the late diplomat, Mr. James Kiboi who perished in Oslo in a house inferno on Sunday September 10th.
Speaking to Kenya Stockholm Blog, Mr. Midenyo said that it is the responsibility of the Kenyan Embassy in Stockholm, Kesofo or a Funeral committee around Mr. Kiboi to ensure that the late diplomat’s body is not sent to Kenya without a Memorial service in Stockholm.
“Mr. Kiboi was a very social person who mingled with everybody. I have gathered that Kiboi’s body will be flown directly to Kenya from Norway. It will be a big mistake if a proper memorial service is not organized for the late Kiboi in Stockholm”, Mr. Midenyo told KSB.
The Kenyan said that Mr. Kiboi is one of the people who inspired the formation of Kesofo and stressed that if the Embassy is unable to organize the Memorial service, then Kesofo should do so because the organization has enough resources.
“We formed a Committee and organized a Memorial service for the late Juliet Kavinga. Why not do the same for Mr. Kiboi who was loved by everybody?”, he posed.
Mr. Midenyo said that due to circumstances, not everybody will be able to visit the late Kiboi’s family at their residence and that under the circumstances, a memorial service will enable many Kenyans and friends who interacted with Kiboi in life to remember him and condole with the bereaved family.
He warned that if the memorial service is not organized, then the Kenyan Embassy in Stockholm, Kesofo or the people in charge of Kiboi’s funeral arrangements shall have failed in one of their major responsibilities.
Many Kenyans have been waiting for an announcement about a public function in relation to the late Mr. Kiboi but so far, nothing has come up.

Kiboi’s Body Released To Family
The body of the late Kenyan diplomat Mr. James Kiboi has been released to the family. Kari Monsen, a police officer at Vestby Police station 50Km from Oslo, Norway, told Kenya Stockholm Blog that an investigation into the fire has been completed but added that the Fire report has not yet arrived at the police station from the Fire technical department. “I cannot comment on the cause of the fire because I haven’t seen the report yet”, she said.
Kari said that the police is treating the fire as a normal accident. “We are not investigating it as a murder case”, she told KSB. She said that the police are also not looking at any possible “conflicts” between Kiboi and anybody else because they are mainly interested in what caused the fire.
“Once the report arrives at my office, I will be able to give more information about what it contains”, she said. Kari was specific that the police report will not be handed over to anybody because it is not a public document.
Members of Mr. Kiboi’s family have been given a go ahead to travel to Norway to view the body. A brief report that was given yesterday by the Kenyan Ambassador to Scandinavia H.E Mr. Daniel Kinyanjui at Kiboi’s house indicated that Kiboi’s body will not be brought to Sweden but will be flown to Kenya directly for burial.
A source in Kenya told KSB that Professor George Saitoti, a former Vice president, is one of the people concerned about the circumstances surrounding Mr. Kiboi’s death. Kiboi’s family members in both Stockholm and Kenya, together with the Kenyan community in Sweden are asking many questions about the circumstances surrounding the diplomat’s death. However, from the line of police investigations, it appears as though these questions might never be answered by the Police report.
A leading theory that has been advanced by a group of Kenyans in Norway is that Kiboi might have been killed but, according to police, there is little evidence to enable them pursue this line of investigation. Kenyans who were surrounding Kiboi during his last moments have refused to go public with what they know while others are harassing and intimidating colleagues who wanted to call a Press conference to outline what happened. A Norwegian man and three Kenyan women have been on the frontline in suppressing sensitive information. KSB has been unable to release bits of information because those who gave it have changed their minds about its release.
